CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed February 14, 1907. 'Serial No'. 3 57,38.
To all whom'it may concer/rp: i
Re it known that I, CLARA' E. lVoonw'oR'rH, a citizen of the ,United States, residing. at Cleveland, in :the county of Cuyahoga and `State of Ohio, haveinyented a' certain new and usefull'nipi'oyemeiit in Corset-s, of which vthe. following isa full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to theA accompanying drawings., i0. 5 .The primary object of this invention is to provide a corset with effective means for supporting the abdomenand lcompressing the hips of the wearer. 1 Corsets commonly in use causefthe soft l5 flesh at the lower edge thereof toI bulge outwardly, which not only presents an ungraceful appearance but is deleterious to health.` W'ith my invention this out-ward bulging is not only prevented but the abdomen is supported and the portion of the bodyover the `hips is restrained and compressed, as desired, giving a graceful appearance, reducing eX- cessiye iesli and supporting the body in its natural position. l
A My invention furthermore provides means t for supporting the stockings, arranged inf that they' sliall h'old'tlie'various parts of the corset in place-rather than such manner displace' them. i p
.The vinvention is hereinafter more fully described and its essential characteristics set .out in the claim. y
' in the drawings, Figure l isv a'perspective `view of my corset in place on. a wearer; F ig. Q- is a back \"iew of the corset; Fig. Sie a vertical'section through the corset in a. plane extendingv from front to back.. Referring to the parts by reference letters, A represents the body, of the corset, 40 which is provided with a fasteningdevice rB in front and a lacing C behind, as is usual.
.ln thesides of the body A `inay be formed sections'D of elastic tapes so arranged as toallowfree moyement to the body while properly supporting and restraining it, as shown and claimed in my Patent No. 591,518.
Carried by the corset body near its lower end-is the supporting member E, made of elastic webbing, extending underneath the body A and projecting below it as shown. Thiswebbing is suitably carried by the` body as indicated by the stitch lines Kas shown.
The webbing is laced infront at F and be? hind at H independently of the lacing of the body A. This is an important point, as it' 55 allows the webbing to be drawn with desired tightness about the hips, and to be vdrawn Aunder the abdomen-to support' `it,fwitliout interfering with the position or lacing of the corset body. a
To prevent undue elasticity to the webbing, l secure thereto inelastic tapesA G in the vicinity of the hips. These tapes are shown as extending fromV the upper end of the .elastic band diagonally downward in pairs to meet at a point, the pairs thus constituting a V-sliape. I
it the lower end of the V-shaped tapes G there are secured to the elastic band the elastic-stocking supporters Lwhich extend downward and are securedin any suitable inanner tothe upper end of the stocking. Extending downward froiu the front of thei corset body and secured to it are elastic stocking supporters J. This arrangement of the front stocking supporters secured to f the corset body and the hip stocking supporters secured to the elastic band isa feature of this invention'. It operates not only1 tolioh the stocking in place but'also to hold 80- the 'elastic band -in place. lf the front supporters J 'ere secured to theelastic band lthey. would operate to pull it away from the abdomen', whereas by being secured to the corset body v'they' allow the elastic band to 85 perform its full ofce. i-t the hips, being secured tothe band, the supporters hold it in place, whereas if theywere secured to the body at this point the band would have a tendency to curl up over the hips; y 90 I claim: The co nbination with corset body haw ing the front fastening and the back lacing, of an elastic bandv made in two parts and ein tending onto the under side of the corset l body near its lower end and projecting below it, said band being sewed to the body, lacing lower end of tbe corset body adjacentto its for the band in front and behind, such 1aeing being` independent of the lacing of the corset body, tapes at the hips sewed to the elastic bandi()l restrain its elasticity, stockandother stocking' supporters secured to the ing supporters secured to the band adjacent to its lower edge'and adjacent to said tapes,
front fastening. 1 o
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
