PATENT OFFICE.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,765, dated January 10, 1905. Application filed September 15, 1904. Serial No. 224,535.
.0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH CALKINs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is intended to obviate the difficulty usually experienced in having objectionable knots at the waist-line, which interfere with the proper adjustment of the outer garments.
My invention is further intended to pro-.
vide such a construction for a corset that the ends of the laces will be independent of each other and at the same time be in a convenient position for tightening or loosening and tying the same.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and definitely set forth in the claim. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure shown illustrates my invention complete with. the laces in place.
My invention may be applied to any form of corset, such as illustrated, for instance, in the accompanying drawing, in which 1 1 are the usual body-pieces. These pieces have the usual eyelets fastened along the rear edge and are adapted to receive the laces, as in the usual construction.
In the body portion of each piece are fastened series of eyelets 3 for receiving the ends of the laces after the rear portion has been closed up with the same. After the laces have been passed through these eyelets 3 3 3 they are tied in the ordinary manner.
The location of the line of eyelets is such that it brings the laces below the waist-line, and consequently out of the way of the waistbands for the outer garments. It will also be seen that by providing the six eyelets at either side of the corset the ends of the lace of the upper portion of the corset can both be brought to the front on one side of the corset, where the wearer can see to tie or untie the same when necessary to adjust the size of the corset, and both ends of the lace of the lower portion of the corset can be brought in like manner to the front on the opposite side of the corset and tied and can remain tied indefinitely, unless the wearer wishes to readjust the size of the corset, and then either portion can be manipulated without disturbing the lace of the other portion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A corset, comprising two parts forming the body, each part having eyelets along its rear edge, and having adjacent to the waist-line thereofa plurality of series of eyelets extending from the rear to the front, a lace threaded in and out of substantially the upper half of the eyelets at the rear, with its duplicate portions threaded in and out of the eyelets adjacent to the waist-line of one part, and a second lace threaded in and out of the remainder of the eyelets at the rear, with its duplicate portions threaded in and out of the eyelets adjacent to the waist-line of the other part.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
