Be it known that I, WALTER S. BARKER, of Cambridge, county of 'Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Garment-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garment pockets, and has for its object to provide improved means for reinforcingand strengthening the pocket at the opening, whereby breaking of -the stitches or tearing of the material'at the .ends of, the pocket-opening is prevented, such reinforcing means being entirely concealed.

In one embodiment .of my invention a short strap is arranged at the end of the pocket-opening which extends across said opening and is attached at the opposite sides thereof, and said strap is folded upon itself and arranged with its folded edge on the inside. My invention, however, includes any form of strap, band or cord or equivalent means which may be employed for the purpose.

I employ my reinforced pocket in waterproof coats, and, in such case, the reinforcing means maybe made of waterproof ma terial, or may be waterproofed when the top of the pocket.

Figure 1 shows a waterproof coat having a reinforced pocket embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the reinforced pocket, the flap covering the pocketopening being partially broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail to be referred to. Figs.& and 5 are views representing a modified form of reinforced pocket embodying my invention.

0 represents a flap which may be employed to cover the pocket-openi ,it being stltched or lotherwise secured to ie coat above the connected wit d represents a strap, band or cord of any suitable material, but preferably Waterproof material, which, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, is made long enough to extend across the pocket-opening and to be attached at the opposite sides thereof, and, as here shown, two such straps are employed arranged one at "each end of the pocket-opening. The inner ends of the straps d are attached beneath the attached portion of the flap 0, and the outer ends extended under a hem which is formed at the upper edge of the front part of the pocket, butit is ob vious that the endsof the straps may be otherwise secured. The straps are preferabl made quite wide, each folded upon itsel preferably on the bias, and they are arranged with their folded edges on the inside, thereby increasing their strength and durability, and furthermore, the overlying portion of the folded strap is narrower than the underlying portion thereof, thereby increasing the width of the end portion orporti ons of the strap at the point or points of attachment. The strap, when folded on the bias, presents a stronger folded edge than when folded in parallel.

The straps thus crossing the pocket-opening serve as reinforcements. at the ends thereof and prevent undue strain coming on the stitches at the ends of the pocket-opening and thereby breaking the stitches or tearing the material at such points. i 7

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
