Leners Patent No. '100,4s7,datea March s, 1870.
IMPRQvEn BARBERS CHAIR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may conce/rn Be it known that I, ANTHONY ABEL, of the city, county, and State ot'New York, have invented a new and usefulImprovement in BarhersvChairs; andI do hereby declare `that the following is a full, clear, and exact.' description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying dra-wing forming part ol' this speeitication.
',lhis invention relates to hai-bers chairs, and consists in certain improvements thereon, which will be speclied hereinafter.
ln the accompanying drawings-- Figure 1 represents a `chair with my adjusting de viec attached.
Figure. .5 is :L thee `view ot' the. scroll gear-wheeh Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the back oi' the chair, the arms B of which are pivotcd to the front legs, as seen in the drawing. l
C is :in upright har or rack the upper end of which is hinged to the lower portion or edge of' the hack A.
D is a. bracket which is snpportedti'om the staple. Ein the hack edge ot' the seat l" by means ot' the block (i, which block is screwed into the lower arm of the bracket. There nre slots Yin both arms of the bracket, through which the har or rack C works up and down. Une edge oi' thishar ,is serrated, or teeth or cogs are formed thereon, as seen i'n the drawing.
1l is a conical genr-wheel, the thread of which engages with thel teeth of't-he rack C.
. lhis wheel is revolved by means of the crank I on `the shaft J, to the end ot' which shaft the wheel is attached.
l K is a tube box att-ached to the back or upright portion of the bracket, by which box the shaft is snpported;
The shaft J is placed at an angle of 'about forty-five degrees with the' ruck, so that the entire thread ot' thel scroll or side ot' the cone is engaged with the teeth of the rack.
The pitch of thc thread of the scroll and the teeth of the rack are made to correspond with each other, and the position olthe cone is such that its side co'rvresponds with the face or serrated edge of the rack.
It-will `be seen that by this arrangement the `back ot' the chair will be raised or lowered according as the crank is turned, and that unlike the ordinary rack and pinion this rack and scroll gear will remain stationary in any position wit-hout fastening ot" any kind. A scroll thread on a tint disk wheel and a. cogged instead ot'a serrated rack may b. employethif des red. i
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to lsecure hy Letters Paytvent` v A-harbcrs chair having the arms B pivoted to prolongations ot the front legs and swinging thereon as a fulcrlim,.while the back A is raised or lowered hy means of rack C and gearH,`all arrangedras specified. 'lhe above specilicution of my invention signed by me this 10th day of January, 1870. Viitnessesz. ANTHONY ABEL.
