Description

B. B. SHOOK. HOLDER FOR PENOILS, PENS, AND THE LIKE.
-APPLICATION I ILED MAR. 31, 1911- 1,004,093. Pa nted Sept-26,1911;
BOYDB. SHOCK, OF RITTMAN, OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1911.
Application filed March 31, 1911. I 'SerialNo. 618,112.
of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Holders for Pencils,
. Pens, and the Like, of which the following i r. is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pencil or pen holders and more particularly to a holder adapted for application to a pocket, and my object is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, cheaply manufactured and adapted for use as an advertising novelty.
' A further object of my invention resides in providing a device which may be quickly, easily and effectively engaged with a pocket of a persons apparel.
A further object resides in providing a device adapted to be used in connection with an elastic band, and a still further object resides in providing the device with means to prevent the cutting of the elastic band.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device, and Fi 4 is a side elevation thereof with the elastic band removed.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in 3 which extend an elastic band or the like 6 encircling said plate, and it will be seen that said band rests against the rear face of said plate, while the same is spaced somewhat SHooK, a
from'the front face thereof,in view of the sockets and the positioning of the grooves therein.
The space between the outer face of the plate "and the elastic band is substantially equal to the projection of the sockets on said front face, and as this projection is less than the ordinary diameter of a pencil or pen, it will be seen that such a pencil or pen may be readily inserted within the space and be securely held therein. In order, however, to prevent the wearing of the elastic band by those portions of the plate formin the edges of the grooves, the same are beve ed, as disclosed at 7 and 8, and thus, no matter what movement the elastic band may have through the insertion and extraction of the pencil or pen from the space between the same and the plate, said band will not become unduly worn. I have also provided means for the engaging of this device with the portions of the apparel, and to this extent, I provide a spring or resilient clip 9 which rests against the rear face of said plate 1 and has the ends thereof bent and extended within the sockets 2 and 3. These ends are securely held within the sockets by means of the retaining wedges or blocks 10 which are mounted in the upper ends of said sockets, and it will be seen that when said clip is properly secured to the plate, the device may be readily engaged with the pocket of a coat, vest or other apparel so as to be disposed on the outside thereof. Pencils, pens or the like may then be readily carried within the space between the outer face of the plate and the elastic band to be readily removed and adapted for use. In this manner, a business man or other party having frequent use for a pencil or pen, may carry the same with him and have them conveniently located so as to be readily used when desired and eliminate any possibility of the same becoming lost.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a pencil and pen holder of such simple and economical construction as to be readily and cheaply manufactured, and under these conditions, the same may be readily used as an advertising novelty. Furthermore, it will be understood that although I have specifically described the construction of the device, various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention Within the scope of the appended claim. i
What I claim is A device of the character described, comprising a plate, the side edges of Which are rolled to form projecting sockets on one face thereof, said sockets being provided With grooves, an elastic band encircling said plate and extending Within said grooves, said 1 sockets spacing the band from the plate a resilient clip engaging the opposite face of said plate and having the ends thereof inserted Within said sockets, and means introduced in said sockets to retain said clip to said plate.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
