Description

MINERVA E. PRIEST, OF WURTLAND, KENTUCKY.
SCREEN.
Application filed March 16, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
Serial No. 614,859.
State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screens;
and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in screens.
One object of the invention is to provide a screen formed in separable sections each of which comprises a frame having a removable screen covering provided with means for detachably securing said covering in place on the frame whereby when one covering becomes worn or broken the same may be readily removed and a new covering substituted.
Another object is to provide a screen of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction and which may be employed as a table or bed screen or for protecting various objects from insects.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved screen; Fig. 2 is a similar view of one secti-on of the same looking toward the inner end thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view through the screen; Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 45 is an enlarged vertical cross sectional view through a portion of one side of the screen showing more particulary the manner in which the clamping band of the screen is held in position for fastening the netting thereon; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the screen fastening bands.
My improved screen is preferably formed in two sections each of which comprises an open frame 1 which may be formed of any suitable material and comprises inclined sides 2 and top 3 and an outer end 4. The sides and top of the frames at the inner ends thereof have connected therewith a cross bar 5 whereby said inner ends of the parts of the frame are braced. V
Adapted to be engaged with the frames forming the sections of the screen vis a covering 6 formed of netting or any other suitable material, said netting being secured at its lower edges to the lower edges of the sides and ends of the frame by a metal clamping band 7 one of which is provided for each section. The inner ends of the bands 7 are bent or folded inwardly to form gripping lugs 8 which are engaged with the edges of the inner ends of the sides of the frame adjacent to their lower edges when the band is slipped down into position on the outer sides and ends of the frame sec tions and over the lower edges of the cover as shown.
In order to hold the bands down in operative position on the sections of the frame, I provide spring projected catches or stop plates 9 which are adapted to work through slots 10 formed in the ends of the opposite side frames said stop plates being secured at their inner ends to flat leaf springs 11 the upper ends of which are riveted or otherwise firmly secured to the inner sides of the ends of the side frame. When thus secured the pressure of the springs 11 is exerted to force the stop plates outwardly through the slots in which position the lower ends of the plates will be disposed immediately above the upper edges of the screen fastening bands and will prevent any upward move ment of the bands on the frames until said plates are depressed. The outer edges of the plates are formed on an angle or inclined downwardly so that when the bands are forced down on the outer sides of the frames and into engageemnt with the stop plates the latter will be retracted or forced back against the pressure of the springs 11 until the bands have passed beneath the plates whereupon the springs will immediately project the plates outwardly above the bands thereby holding the latter in position.
The sections of the frame when assembled have their inner open ends engaged and when thus engaged, said sections are preferably held together by hooks 12 secured to the outer sides of one section and adapted to be engaged with eyes 13 secured to the outer sides of the adjoining section. In thus connecting the sections the latter will be securely held in position to form the screen.
The sides of the screen are preferably inclined or formed at an angle to permit the sections to be readilynested together for packing or shipping and to permit the screens and fastening bands to be readily engaged with and removed from the frames when desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A screen of the character described comprising a frame formed in detachably connected sections, said frame sections having inclined sides and one end open, hook and eye fastening devices arranged on said open ends of the frame sections whereby the same are secured together in operative en$ gagement, screen coverings adapted to be engaged with said sections, clamping bands adaptedto be engaged with the lower portions of the frames to hold the lower ends of the coverings in place, spring clips formed on the inner ends of said bands and adapted to engage the open ends of the frame sections whereby said ends of the bands are secured in place, spring catches arranged in the opposite sides of the frame sections and adapted to spring into engagement with the upper edges of the bands whereby the latter are removably secured in place to fasten the coverings to the frame sections.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.`
