Description

W. E. BECK.
PURSE.
AZILIUATION FILED APR. 11, 191
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER E. BECK, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE- -IALF TO REDMOND MGDOUGALL, OF WESTLEY, CALIFORNIA.
PURSE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVAL'rnR E. BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Purses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to purses.
The object of the present invention is to provide a means whereby purses, pocketbooks, money bags and the like may be safely and easily connected to the wearing apparel of the owner or user, so as to prevent the accidental loss of the pocketbook or purse and prevent it from being opened without the knowledge of the wearer.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved safety pocket-book or purse. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through the same.
In the present embodiment of my invention 2 represents a suitable form of purse or pocket-book adapted to receive coins or such articles as the owner might desire to carry. The pocket-book is closed by means of a palr of complementary frames 3 and 4c, pivoted at 5.
The salient feature of the present 1nvention is to provide means whereby the pocketbook or purse can be earned without danger of accidentally opening and losing a portion of its contents, and which may be fastened to the wearing apparel so as to relieve the user of the responsibility of constantly holding the same in ones hand or suspending it from the wrist. v
The safety fastening dev1ce compr1ses a resilient shank or pin 6 which is connected, as at 7, to the inner surface of one of the frames, as 3, and which pm pro ects longitudinally and parallel with the nner surface of the frame 3 at a sufficient distance from the inner surface to permit the pm to project slightly beyond the outer side or surface of the opposite plvoted frame 4. The frame 4 is slotted longitudinally, as at 8, forming an opening through which the longitudinal pin or shank 6 may pass when the two frames or sections 3 and 4 are swung with their inner faces in contact. When in Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 11, 1911.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911. Serial No. 620,452.
this position the pin or shank 6 occupies a position slightly beyond and parallel with the outer face of the frame section 4. The pin may then be readily passed through the fabric of the wearing apparel of the user and the free end of the pin is then sprung backwardly under a receiving hook or loop 9 fastened to the inner longitudinal face of the frame 3 upon which the opposite end of the pin 6 is fastened at 7. When thus pinned to the wearing apparel of the user, the pocket-book cannot be opened without the knowledge of the owner or wearer and is insured against removal or loss and can only be opened by releasing the pin 6 from the retention or restraint of the receiving hook 9, when the pin 6 may then be withdrawn from the fabric to which it has been attached and the frames of the pocket-book may then be opened about their pivots 5.
The pocket-book may be opened and closed freely by means of suitable resiliently supported engageable knobs 10 attached to the upper edge of the frames 3 and 4t, and when so used, the possessor of the pocket-book need not necessarily pin the same to her apparel and the point of the pin 6 may be swung under the receiver 9 so as to avoid any danger to the person opening the pocketbook.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a simple means whereby the pocket-book is rendered perfectly safe and can be attached to the wearing apparel of the possessor when it is seldom required to be opened. When the possessor is shopping or has frequent requirements necessitating the opening of the purse or pocket-book, the latter can be held in the hand and the spring 6 sprung under its receiver 9.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A safety purse comprising a receptacle, frames by which the receptacle may be closed, pivots upon which the frames may move, one of said frames having a longitudinal slot, and means connected to the other frame whereby the purse may be attached to a fabric, said means including a spring pin connected to the inner face of one of the pivoted frames and projecting longitudinally along the same, and adapted to bodily pass through the slot of the other frame, and a receiver for the free end of the pin said receiver being secured to the inner face of the framewhich carries the pin, and being exposable through the slot of the other frame.
2. The combination with a receptacle, of a pair of hingedly connected frames, by which said receptacle may be closed, and means whereby the receptacle may be attached to a fabric, said means including a spring pin 10 secured to and spaced from and arranged parallel with the inner face of one of the frames, a receiving hook on the inner face of said frame, beneath which the pin may be sprung, the other frame being formed with a longitudinal slot through which the pin is adapted to pass transversely and beyond which last named frame, the pin projects longitudinally and sufficiently to receive one or more plies of fabric through which the pin may be inserted.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my handin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
