BERNARD F. ROEHRIG, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO M. N. GOLDTIREE AND I. A. BLOCHMAN,
OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
POWDER-BOX.
Application filed. January 24, 1910, Serial No. 539,773. Renewed March 11, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD F. RoErIRIe, of America, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to powder boxes and has for its object the provision of a receptacle for containing toilet powder, to
gether with a screen maintained in operative relation to such receptacle and in such a position that the surplus powder upon the powder-puff may be removed by dusting the powder-puff across said screen, said surplus powder ultimately being returned to the receptacle.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a toilet powder receptacle showing the screen in its operative position in full lines and indicating the inoperative or folded position of said screen in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section with the screen in full lines in its folded position and in dotted lines in its operative position.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a box-like receptacle adapted to contain toilet powder. Mounted for swinging movement within the receptacle 5 is a frame 6, the face of which is covered by a screen 7. The frame is mounted for swinging movement by hingedly connecting it to the receptacle 5 by means of preferably fabric hinges 8. While fabric hinges may be employed for the sake of economy, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in this respect, but that other forms of hinges may be substituted therefor if desired. In the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the frame 6 comprises the side walls 9, a rear wall 10 and a bottom 11. A tab 12 secured to the rear wall 10 forms a hand-grasp by which the user may swing the frame to the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 2.
It is to be understood that the bulk of the toilet powder will be placed in the right hand end of the receptacle 5, and with the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 613,850.
screen carrying frame in the full line position illustrated in Fig. 1 it is apparent that any powder adhering to the powder-puff (not shown) may be removed by dusting the powder-puff lightly across the face of the screen 7, it being apparent that at this time the solid back 10 prevents said powder from falling out over the rear end wall of the box, said excess powder preferably falling upon the bottom 11 of the frame and being returned to the interior of the receptacle 5 when said frame is swung to its folded position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 2. It is apparent, however, that the bottom 11 may be omitted. to permit the powder to fall directly into the interior of the receptacle 5 instead of upon said bottom.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and eificient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with a powder receptacle of a screen and means for supporting said screen in operative relation to said receptacle in such manner that access other than through said screen may be had to said receptacle for the purpose of pressing a powder-puff into engagement with the powder contained therein, the excess powder from said puff falling back into said receptacle when said puff is dusted across said screen.
2. The combination with a powder receptacle of a screen and means for supporting said screen in operative relation to said receptacle in such manner that access other than through said screen may be had to said receptacle for the purpose of pressing a powder-puff into engagement with the powder contained therein, the excess powder from said puff falling back into said receptacle when said puff is dusted across said screen, said screen being mounted in such manner as to fold down inside of said receptacle.
3. The combination with a powder receptacle of a swinging screen and means for supporting said screen in operative relation to said receptacle in such manner that access other than through said screen may be had to said receptacle for the purpose of pressing a powder-puff into engagement with the powder contained therein, the excess powder from said puff falling back into said receptacle when said puff is dusted across said screen.
4. The combination with a powder receptacle of a frame hingedly connected to said receptacle and adapted to swing down inside of said receptacle and a screen carried by said frame, said frame comprising a solid rear wall.
5. The combination with a powder receptacle of a screen-carrying frame hingedly connected at its front and bottom corners to Copies of this patent may be obtained for .thebottom of said receptacle and adapted to fold down inside of said receptacle, said frame supporting said screen in an inclined position with relation to said receptacle.
6. The combination with a powder receptacle of a screen-carrying frame hingedly connected at its front and bottom corners to the bottom of said receptacle and adapted to fold down inside of said receptacle, said frame supporting said screen in an inclined position with relatlon to said receptacle and said frame comprising a solid rear wall.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
BERNARD F. ROEHRIG.
