Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. i5, 1911.
Application led March 16, 1911. Serial No. 614,829.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN Mennowrrz, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing in the borough of the Bronx; in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and cemplete disclosure.
My invention relates to handles which are usually composed of a metallic core or frame covered with-leather or other similar elas= tic material and adapted to be attached to a bagv or suitcase by means of suitable rings riveted to the frame' of the bag or suitcase.
Heretofore in the manufacture of cores rr frames for handles, it has been customary to use a piece of wire, the ends of which have' been enlarged by casting or molding on the ends thereof knobs of metal, such as lead, and which have holes passing therethrough to receive the rings on the frame of the bag.
The object of my 'invention is to substi tute for this construction, a more simple and stronger4 arrangement of the Wire, which will not only cheapen the cost of manufacture, but provide a more durable and effective article.
For a detailed description of several forms of my invention, which I at present deem preferable, reference may be had to the following specification and lto the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure l is aside elevation of a handle showing in dotted lines my improved core or frame therein. Fig. 2 is an end View of the wire illustrated in Fig. 1, separated from the covering of the handle. Fig. 3 is a view taken at right angles to that of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are plan views of modified forms.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the frameor wire base of the handle which terminates at each end in helical -coils 2 which lare formed on said wire during` the process of manufacture. Said coils 2 are preferably connected with the straight portion 1 of the wire by means of an anguiar bend 3, so that the axial line of the /main portion of the wire will pass through the center portion of the coilat substantially right angles to the axis thereof.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the end. of the coil instead .of terminating with the last convolution, is continued and bent back at anl angle, as indicated at 4, its end being provided with a hook 5 which is bent about the end or shank of th handle where the angular portion 3 extends laterally. This construction makes a coil somewhat more rigid, and prevents the same from twisting.
In Fig. 5 the modification is similar to that of Figs. 1, 2 and 3, with the exception that the helix formed on. the end lof the wire is enlarged at its outer ends, as indicated 4at. 6, so as to conform more closely with the shape of the rings 7 by which'the4 handle is attached to the bag or suitcase.
I-Iaving described these forms of my-invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. In a handle, a core composed of a single wire and having 'transverse helices' formed on the ends thereof, the lateral ends of said helices being situated symmetrically on each side of the axis of said core.
2. In a handle, a core composed of a sin gle wire having transverse helices formed integrally on the ends thereof, said wire being bent laterally and connected with one end of each of said coils, so that the axis of the core passes transversely through the helices midway their ends.
3. In a handle, a core composed of a single wire having transverse helices formed onthe ends thereof and situated symmetrically on each side of the axis of said core, the ends of said helices being bent laterally thereof and fixed to the main shank of said core.
4. In a handle, a metallic core, a fibrous covering completely inclosing the same, said core comprising transverse wire helices l0- cated within said covering at its ends, and a central wire rigidly connecting said helices at points intermediate their ends.
Signed at the city, county and State ofl New York, this 14th day of March, 1911,
, BENJAMIN. MARKOWITZ. Witnesses:
JOHN D. CARBERRY, Enw. W. VAILL, J 1'.
