Be it known that I, HERBERT D. BEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Nestfield, in the county of Hampdenan'd'Sta-te of Massachusetts, have invented newr and useful Improvements in Vihips, of which the following is a specification. p

My invention relates to whi ps generally,and especially to the class employing a ratan or rawhide stock or center and provided With an exterior braided or otherV covering.

My invention consists in the partsand the construction and combination of parts forming the improved Whip, Which I will hereinafter describe and claim. i

In the accompanyingdrawings,formingpart of this specification and in which similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts, Figure l isa side elevation of a portion of a Whip With the outer covering removed to disclose the spi rally-Woundload at the butt-end. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the outer covering in placeand the handle portion otherwise finished. Fig. 3 is an enlarged part-elevation and part-sectional View of the handle portion. Fig. 4i represents a rawhide center, the spirally-disposed load and an outer covering forming a'stock, the latter bein gl broken away to expose the center and load.

In this art the practice has been for years and still is toload the butt-end of Whips whenever it is possible. This practice has been folloiyed with all classes of Whips except those of Y the cheapest character. The loadingof certain classes of whips has been attended with more or less difficulty and considerable loss, due to the breakage of the stock either during the course of the manufacture of then/hip or after the Whip has been put to limited use. In the case of what is termed a ratan throughwhip -t`. e., a Whip including a stock formed of a piece of ratan tapering from butt 4to tip and built upwith paper aroundthe buttto obtain the desired size and shape-' many efforts have been made to load the handle, and among which efforts may be noted the boring in at the butt and inserting a metal plug. This proved unsatisfactory and more orless objectionable because so much ofthe thickness of the stock was removed to form the bore for the plug that the stock was so weaken ed that are usually loaded by means cfa cast-iron plug or spike driven into the'butt, VWhile in another class of whips a rawhideA center is lused vextending clear through the Whip from butt totip, with the end of the rawhide showing at the butt, the rawhide being contained Within'astock composed of ratan or Wood; but such a Whip could not be loaded bythe methods in vogue, as in the one case the cast iron plug or spike could not practically be boredthrough, as in doing so so much of the stock would be removed as to render the use of the spike practically valueless,'as the spike was then found to be too fragile.

The difficulties attending the manufacture of such whips as are above jalluded to have not heretofore been cured as far as I know, although the trade is constantlydemanding a successfully-loaded, cheap, strong, and pli able `Whip ot' the character before noted. Extensive experiment has shown me that the desired objects are attainable by using as a load for the handle portion of a whip a piece of metal which is spirally coiledraround the exterior of the stock and just beneath the 4outer braided or other covering or around the rawhide center in the Whips employing such a center-and stocking it up bythe methods usually employed in the manufacture of Whips. i

In .carrying forward my invention I construct the stock A in the usual .manner and of ratan' or any other material which may be used to form the stock. To give the stock the desired size and shape at the butt-end, it is usual to build it up with paper, as shown at a in Fig. l. The stock so produced I load -by spirally coiling about its butt-end a strip of metalB, preferably lead, the edges of Whose IOO individual coils are open, as shown at h, Fig. l, the terminals of the said strip being secured to the stock by pins c or other wellknown means, although, if desired, t-he pins may be omitted, as the lead strip'may be coiled sufficiently tight as to insure its being held frictionally in place during the process of braiding or putting on the exterior covering C. The disposition of the metal strip exterior to the stock gives to the Whip the so much sought for load at the butt-end, andthe load is fixed in position Without any of the dangers and losses due to cutting away or boring of the stock which heretofore have been common in the manufacture of Whips having an inserted plug.

Aside from the successful loaded feature of my Whip there are other advantages which flow from the employment of the spiral strip and Which are appreciated by the users of Whips. For instance, the open edges of the spirally-coiled strip enable the stock to substantially retain its original iiexibility, and when the outer covering C is braided or otherwise put on it sinks into the groove formed by the open edges, so that the completed Whip Will have-a iiexible and loaded handle spirally grooved to increase its ornamentation and provide a ventilated grip which Will obtained by coiling the strip B about the rawhide or other center C', as shown, and then stocking the handle portion up in the usual manner, as shown at D', it being understood that in said Fig. 4 a portion only of the outer flexible covering E' of the whip is shown and that in the finished Whips the usual ferrules D and E and other Well-known accessories Will be employed to heighten the attractiveness of the article.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-v 1. In a Whip having a stock, or center adapted to extend from butt to tip, a strip of metal Wound spirally about and conned wholly tothe handle portion thereof and exterior thereto, and having open edges to preserve the flexibility of the stock, or center, and a covering exterior to the metal strip.

2. In a Whip the combination of a stock, a load therefor consisting of an exterior spirally-WoundA strip of metal, and a flexible outer covering, said strip having open edges to preserve the flexibility of the stock and form a spiral groove into which the outer covering is drawn to produce a spirallygrooved handle.
