UNITED STATES HENRY CAVE, or HARTFORD, AND wALTER'HfRUDoLrH', v'or WEST HARTFORD, 00N- PATENT oFFlcE; t,
NECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO THE FULLER BRUSH COMPANY, 0F HARTFORD, CONNEC- TICUT, A CORPORATION 0F CONNECTICUT.
CLEANING IMPLEMENT.
Application filed January 30, 1925.
This invention relates more especially to the class of devices employed for cleaning floors or similar surfaces, and an object of the invention, among others, is the product-ion of a mop that shall be strong and durable, and
that shall be particularly efficient in its operf ation. And a further object of the invention is the production of a mop having the qualities above set out, and that may be manufactured with a minimum of labor and expense.
@ne form 0f mop embodying the invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as Well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which--y Figure l is a top view of the improved mop.
Figure 2 is a back view of the same, with the mop material extended and partially cut oft'.
Figure 3 is a view in section on a plane denoted by the dotted line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, scale enlarged, through a portion of the frame.
In the accompanying drawings the nnmeral 5 indicates the outer member of the frame of a cleaning implement, as a mop, and 6 the inner member thereof. This outer member is channelled from end to end, forming an open slot 7 while the eXtreme ends of said outer member are preferably closed tightly against the ends of the inner member, as indicated at 8. This inner member is a wire extending substantially from end to end of the outer member, and the cleaningmaterial, in the form of threads or strings 9 of cotton, when the structure is used as a Hoor mop` or of other suitable material in the case of other sorts of cleaning implements, is secured and held between the inner and outer members, such cleaning material, as threads or strings when employed, being folded about midway of the length thereof over the inner member 6, the outer member being compressed iirmly against the mass of threads intermediate the ends of the frame, and also tightly against the ends of the inner member, as hereinbefore stated. In inclosing and securing the core and cleaning material Within the outer member or casing the slot 7 is cre- Serial' No. 5,767.
ated through which the material extends, the edges 10, however, being pressed into close contact with said material to securely retain it in place, and as shown in Figure l of the drawings.
In order that the cleaning material shall not be cut or unduly worn care is taken to avoid any sharp corners or edges. This may be done in many different ways, in the structure herein shown the edges 10 being slightly outturned, thus presenting a curved surface at the edges of the slot. It will be obvious, however, that thisfcurved edge may be produced in other ways and that other means for avoiding the sharp corners or edges may be employed.
In compressing the outer member around the folded end of the mass of material and the core, the operation is so conducted that the metal will lbe setfrmly against the mass, that is the metal is compressed and forced against the material in such a manner that it will not spring away from such material after the pressure of the bending implement is released and the material is, therefore, securely clamped between the edges of the slot, this comprising an important feature of the invention.
The bending of the member 5 out of a straight line and into the form shown in Figure 1, brings the ends o-f said member adjacent each other for attachment to a handle. When the member 5 is so bent, the same is preserved in its tubular form and the bends afford rigid support to retain the `tubular form and tend to prevent separation of the edges l0 which iirmlv clamp the material 9.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes we have described the principles of operation of our invention together with the device which we now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but we desire to have it understood that the de vice shown is only illustrative and that the invention as comprised in the .appended claim may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.
We claim:
A cleaning implement comprising an inner member, cleaning material folded over said inner member, and an outer member inelosing said inner member `and the folded port1on ot said material and comprising a metallic sheath havinga slot with its edges en- Q gaged with said material, said Structure being bent to form a frame, the bends of whichimpart added rigidity to maintain the tubular form of the tubular member and its edges in Contact With said material, the Cleaning material terminating inwardly of the ends of the tubular member, and the ends of the tubular member being adjacently disposed for attachment to a handle.
