u PETERS MW- W 'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. GLADDING, OF'CHESTER, CONNECTICUT.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,201, dated July 15, 1884. Application filedMay 1, 1883. (N model.)
1'0 all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. GLADDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of 5 Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to improvements in brushes; and it consists in a brush formed of a central part and an encompassing por tion, all being preferably of cylindrical form.
r 5 The invention will be readily understood from the description hereinafter presented,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a detached view of the central 2c part of the brush. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the encompassing part thereof, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the finished brush. A denotes the central part of the b1'ush,the encompassing portion being lettered B. The part A may be formed in any suitable manner, but preferably by securing the bristles upon a wire wound into a spiral groove on the end of the handle C. The construction of the part B is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The bristles are twisted between two or more wires, or between two parts of the same wire in the customary manner, the part thus formed being applied around the end and sides of the part A, as indicated in Fig. 3, and being held 5 in this position by the insertion of the ends of the wire into the handle C in closeproximity to the inner end of thepart A, as shown in the sectional part of Fig. 3.
The parts of the brush may be formed and secured in position in various ways, which 40 will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention. The bristles forming portions of the parts A B are intermeshed, as shown, so as to form a complete article, and one capa- 4.5 ble of fulfilling the functions of a flesh-brush.
The invention may be utilized in the manufacture of brushes of various kinds, and is especially applicable to brushes having long handles, such as flesh-brushes, &c.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The brush hereinbefore described, consisting of the rigid central part, A, provided with bristles and formed on the end of the handle 5 C, and the closely encompassing twisted wire part B, which is supported on the outer end' of the central part,A, and carries bristles, and the ends of which part B are secured and protected by being inserted into the sides of the handle, the bristles on the parts A B being intermeshed, whereby a firm broad brush capable of use as a flesh-brush is produced, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 6 5 presence of two witnesses. I
GEORGE S. GLADDING.
