G. A. MCINTOSH METALLIC BOBBIN, SPOOL, AND THE LIKE Filed April '7, 1922 Patented od. 9, 1923;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. IvIoINTOSH, OI CHELMSFOED, MASSACHUSETTS.
METALLIC BOBBIN, SPDOL, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed April 7,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. MoINrosH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chelmsford, county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Metallic Bobbins, Spools, and the like, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to bobbins, spools and like filament holders of looms and textile machinery in general. Bobbins and like filament holders have heretofore been made of wood on account of the requirement of lightness in weight, though all wood bobbins are subject to serious objections in their tendency to check and splinter, and being subject to rapid deterioration from the rough usage to which they are necessarily subjected in service. It has not, so far as I am aware been considered practicable heretofore to produce a bobbin of metal for the reason that no metal has been light enough in weight, and at the same time strong enough for the requirements. I have found that by the use of a suitable alloy comprising a major proportion of the metal magnesium. a bobbin may be produced that combines the requisite lightness with a degree of strength and wear resisting quality, that renders it far superior to the usual bobbin of wood, and is available at a cost even less than wooden bobbins, taking into consideration its much greater period of service. In carrying out my invention I employ an alloy composed of a major proportion of metallic magnesium, the magnesium element constituting preferably about ninety-six per cent ot the alloy. The other elements of the alloy are a relatively small proportion of zinc, and in some cases a still smaller proportion of copper. I have found that these elements combined in the proportions of ninety-six and one-half per cent of magnesium with three and one-quarter per cent or thereabouts of zinc. and about one-quarter of one per cent of copper is especially well. suited for the requirements. The alloy thus produced has a specific gravity very substantially less than that of aluminum, i. e., about one-third lighter and it exhibits a relatively high degree of tensile strength I922. Serial no. 550,369.
and wear resisting quality. Further when case into bobbins, spools and the like, the product is'very compact and homogeneous, and is free from brittleness. In the drawings Figure 1 shows a bobbin 10, and Figure 2 shows a spool 11 produced of the alloy of my invention. I do not desire to be limited to the precise illustrative disclosure herein, but refer to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Itlaving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A metallic bobbin or like filament holder tor textile machinery, comprising a major proportion of magnesium and minor proportions of zinc, and copper.
2. A metallic bobbin or like filament holder for textile machinery, comprising a major proportion of magnesium and a minor proportion of zinc.
A metallic bobbin or like filament holder for textile machinery, composed of metallic magnesium, alloyed to increase the tensile strength and reduce the brittleness thereof.
4. A metallic bobbin or like filament holder for textile machinery, composed of magnesium about ninety-six and one-half per cent. zinc about three and one-quarter per cent, and copper about one-quarter per ent.
5. As an article of manufacture, a spindle for s inning machinery comprising an in tegral tubular body 05 non-corrodible. light weight magnesium alloy having a head with ntegrally to-rmed holding rings.
6. an article of manufacture. a spindle for spinning:- machinery comprising an integral cast metal tubular body of magnesium alloy having a tapered stem and a head with integrally formed holding rings.
7 an article of manufacture, a hollow tapered integral light weight, nonrcorrodible cast-metal textile sp ndle containing a preponderance of magnesium.
8. As an article of manufacture, an integral light weight. non-corroding textile spindle containingmetallic magnesium.
In testimony whereof. I have signed my name to this specification.
GEORGE A. MCINTOSH.
