Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
Application filed August 4, 1914. Serial No. 855,039.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARY ELLEN WALSH, a subject of the King of England, and resident of Burnley, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttles for Weaving, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shuttles for weaving, and in particular to self-threading shuttles in which a deep groove or slot is cut in the wood of the shuttle near the eye. It consists in forming the metal nose at the threading end of the shuttle with two external arms or inwardly projecting plates embracing the wood body of the shuttle and shaped to correspond with the shape of the front of the said groove or slot, which partial sheathing of metal increases the durability of the shuttle.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have hereto annexed drawings illustrating the said invention in practice.
Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of a portion of a self-threading shuttle of the type to which this invention relates.
1 indicates the wood body of the shuttle, 2 the threading groove or slot, 3 the eye, and 4 the nose of the shuttle, which nose is preferably made of forged steel, and has formed integrally with it two rearwardly projecting arms 5 and 6. These arms are shaped to correspond with the shape of the front of the threading groove; they are tapered or let into the wood so as to maintain a smooth surface, and may be secured by countersunk screws 7 in addition to the usual means for securing the metal nose directly to the shuttle. By the use of these arms, the liability to breakage of the wooden parts of the shuttle adjacent to the groove is greatly reduced. 1
What I claim, is
A shuttle having a V-shaped threading slot in the front end of its body portion, both members of the said slot being inclined to the longitudinal axis of the shuttle and the shuttle body being provided with an eye ad jacent to the rear end of one of the slot members, said shuttle having a pointed metallic nose at its front end provided with two diverging arms which are let into and secured to the body portion and which are arranged wholly in front of the said V-shaped slot and which protect the front edges of its slot members.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARY ELLEN WALSH.
