SELF-THREADIN G SHUTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1916.
Application filed May 6, 1915. Serial No. 26,280.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN WILLIAMS, acitizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Threading of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shuttles for looms, and its object is to provide a shuttle of the so-called self-threading type, which can be readily threaded withoutthe necessity of sucking the thread through one or more apertures; a method of threading been prohibited by law in some States.
The invention consists in ashuttle provided at one end with an open longitudinal slit whose bottom lies near the axis of the shuttle, and whose outer end communicates with a zigzag slot formed by suitable intermeshing tongues on the end of the wooden body, portion of the shuttle and the base of its metallic tip. This zigzag slot terminates in line with the usual thread groove formed in the side of the shuttle.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is side elevation ofa portion of a shuttle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the metallic tip of the shuttle, on a larger scale, and Fig. 4:. is a similar view of the end of the body portion of the shuttle which coiiperates with the tip.
No change is made in the general shape and structure of the shuttle, which comprises the usual wooden body 1 having the recess 2 for the bobbin 3, and a longitudinal groove 4 along one side. The point of the shuttle is of the usual conoidal shape, and terminates in a metallic tip- 5. Lengthwise of the end portion Got the body there is a. deep open radial slit 7, whose bottom lies near the axis of the shuttle, as appears in Fig. 1. This slit extends from the recess 2 to the tip 5. A projection or tongue 8 extends longitudinally from the body 1, between the slit and a recess or notch 9; while between the recess or notch and another one,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 10, is a second shorter tongue 11. The metallic tip 5 has a flat base 12 which abuts against the end of the body 1 and is provided with a central shank 13 to enter a central socket in the body. The tip has a recess 14 in one side to receive the tongue 8. Between the recess 14 and another one, 15, there is a projection 16 which cooperates with the notch9. The tongue 11 enters the recess 15 and a small recess 17 registers with the notch 10. The projections and recesses on the body and tip are so shaped and proportioned that when the parts are assembled there is a narrow space between the body and the tip communcating with the deep radial slit 7. This space forms a zigzag slot or passage, the thread groove shuttle. 7
To thread the shuttle, the thread from the bobbin is laid down into the slit 7 carried around the end of the tongue 8, then back under the end of the projection 16, forward around the end of the tongue 11. and into the registering recesses 10, 17. The operation can be very quickly and easily performed, in almost an instant of time; and when the shuttle is once threaded there is no danger of the thread becoming displaced during the working of the loom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A self threading shuttle having a groove along one side and an open longitudinal slit in its top at one end extending to the tip of the shuttle, a tongue extending from the body. of the shuttle adjacent to said slit, a second tongue extending from said body and separated from the first by a recess, said body also having a recess on the other side of said second tongue, and a metallic tip for the shuttle having three recesses alternating with two tongues, the latter entering the re cesses in the body, and two of the recesses receiving the tongues on the body, while the third recess in the tip coiiperates with a portion of one of the recesses in the body to form a guide for the thread in line with the groove in the side of the shuttle.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
OWEN WILLIAMS.
