SELF-THREDING SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 690,177, dated December 31, 1901.
Application filed August 5, 1901.
To a/ZZ whom. it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. NORTHROP, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tustin, county of Orange, State of Califor- Threading Loom-Shuttles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspecication, like letters on the drawings representing like This invention has for its object the iinprovement in loom-shuttles whereby pinching of the running thread when the shuttle is in use and consequent severance of the The usual loom-shuttle is provided with an external longitudinal groove or recess extended along one side of the shuttle-body from the thread-delivery eye to receive the pinched between the side of the shuttle-body and the wall of the shuttle-box. So long as the thread lies properly in such groove there is no opportunity for pinching; but the will often tend to lower it, so that it will be caught between the front wall of the shuttlebox and the side of the shuttle, above or below the groove. In my present invention I delivery eye located adjacent the bottom of the shuttle, and I have also shown the threadgroove located on the side of the shuttle-body adjacent the bottom thereof, so that if the drops onto the bottom of the shuttle-box.
Figure lis a top or plan view of a Wellknown form of loom-shuttle having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevaand the thread-groove adjacent the bottom of the shuttle-body. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line o: fr, Fig. 1, looking to the left, to show more clearly the thread- I have herein shown my invention as applied to an automatic self-threading shuttle, substantially such as shown and described in United States Patent No. 574,864, granted filling carrier or bobbin B, having the rings a at its base, the holding-jaws C, and the aumatic self-threading device D may be and are substantially as in the patent referred to, the
Serial No. 701879. (No model.)
threading device being provided with a longitudin al thread-entrance d', (see Fig. 1,) having at one side a horn d2, a space oll being left beneath the outer end of the horn and the top of the shuttle-body to conduct the thread through a downwardly-inclined slot d to the thread-delivery eye e. As shown in Fig. 2, the thread-delivery eye is located adjacent the bottom of the shuttle-body, sothat the thread instead of being delivered from the side of the shuttle substantially midway between the top and bottom thereof is delivered at or near the bottom.
A longitudinal thread-groove h (see Fig. 2) is formed in the outer face of one of the side walls of the shuttle, leading from the delivery-eye e toward the opposite end of the shuttle, the groove being located adjacent the bottom of the shuttle. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be seen that t-he groove is formed by the overhanging shoulder hX, so that if the thread drops it will drop onto the bottom of the shuttle-box and cannot be pinched between the front plate thereof and the side face i of the shuttle.
By the longitudinal axis of the shuttle I mean a line extended longitudinally through the shuttle from one to the other point thereof.
I have herein shown my invention as applied to a shuttle provided with an automatic threading device; but my invention is not restricted to such application, as it may be used in connection with other types of loomshuttles.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A loom-shuttle rectangularin cross-section and having a thread-delivery eye in-its side, and a longitudinal threadgroove on the' shuttle side at the bottom thereof, leading from the eye.
2. A loom-shuttle, rectangular in cross-section and having an automatic self-threading device, and a thread-delivery eye in the side of the shuttle and adjacent the bottom thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES II. NORTI-IROP.
