Be it known that I, JEAN B. DAUDELIN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county. of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Threading Loom-Shuttles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to self threading shuttles and consists in certain improved features of construction and combination whereby the thread is guided to the delivery eye of the shuttle.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings and it is fully disclosed in the following specificationand claims- In the drawings, Figure 1 ha perspective view of one form of shuttle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the deliveryend of the shuttle through the delivery eye. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 00-01: Fig. 1 Figs is a view of the face plate of the threading recess detached. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the delivery eye showing thethread retaining devices. Fig. 6 is a partial top plan view of a slightly modified form of shuttle embodying my invention. Fig. 7 is a centralverti cal section of the same. Fig. 8 is a trans verse section on line 8-8 Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is a transverse section on line 9 -9 Fig. 6. Figs. 10 and 11 are detail views.
In the form of shuttle shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive of the drawings, A represents the body of the shuttle which is of any usual or preferred form and provided with thespindle B also of any preferred form. The delivery end of the shuttle is provided with a recess a which I term the threading recess)? forward of the spindle recess. This recess a. is preferably partially separated from the spindle recess by the vertical wings a a which extend from the sides of the shuttle body toward the center and serve to prevent an undue amount of vibration of the thread as it is drawn from the spindle. The wall a t is preferably inclined near the top to guide the thread down between the walls and it may be provided with a metal guide or strip as shown in the drawings. The front wall of this threading recess is formed by plate C shown in detail Fig. 4, which is preferably 0 may also be provided with a projection c by means of whichit can be attached to the secured to the body of the shuttle from beupper faceof the shuttle to secure it rigidly or it may be attached in any otherpreferred manner. The projection D is of tapering form, may be hollow or solid as preferred, and is angular in cross section having a'horizontal face'lying flush with the upper face of the shuttle body and having a depending portion d ex.- tending downward andtoward the side of the shuttle as shown in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The recess (1 corresponds to the shape of the projection D and the inner wall of said recess lies parallel to and a slight distance from the part 01' forming a thread passage and a similar thread passage is formed between the edge of the upper face of the part D and the side wall of the recess (1. The lateral edge of the vertical plate 0 contiguous to the thread opening 0' lies at a slight distance from the side of the shuttle body at that side of the same thus forming a thread ing slit 0 (see Fig. 1) for guiding the thread down into the thread opening 0'.
Just forward of the plate 0 is a shallow re-' cess e'opening into recess a. but separated therefrom by the said plate. A tubular-passage extends forward from this recess e in an oblique direction through the front end of the shuttle body to the side of the shuttle as shown in Fig. 2 and in thispassage is located the cylindrical thread guide and delivery eye F shown in detail Fig 5, forming a delivery ICC) passage connecting. the thread opening 0" with the delivery eye of the shuttle. The upper portion of this thread guide F is provided wlth a longitudinal slit E, and the body of the shuttle is also provided with a threading slit E for the delivery passage extending from plate 0 adjacent to the inner face of the projection D to the edge of the shuttlein an inclined direction and communicating with the slit E in the guide F throughout its length.
The slit E near the delivery end of the guide F curves downwardly and then upwardly forming the retaining projections f f extendinin line with the surface of the guide but inopposite directions and the guide F may also be provided at its outer end with an angular projection f adapted to engage a recess iii the body of the shuttle and be driven in, thereby holding the thread guide firmly in position. It will be seen that the threading slit 0 for the thread opening a which is located at one side of the shuttle body communicates with the thread opening and also with the threading slit E for the delivery passage, by means of the recessed portions around the projection D, as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 1.
The shuttle body forward of the slit E is curved where it abuts upon the slit, and to facilitate the construction of the shuttle I may recess the shuttle forward of the slit E and put in a flat piece E having a curved edge e adjacent to the slit E, said piece E being secured to the shuttle by nails or screws as indicated in the drawings, or other preferred means.
The operation of the device is as follows: If it is desired to thread the shuttle the thread is drawn forward from the spindle until it lies in the passage formed between the projection D and the side wall of recess 01 and engages the threading slit 0 for the thread opening 0', when it will pass under the point of said projection. and engage the inclined face (1 of the projection D. The curved edge of the plate 0 adjacent to the threading slit 0 will direct the thread into the thread opening 0' as it is drawn along. The thread is then drawn backward along the passage formed between the plate d and the inner face of the recess d and .is guided by the curved portion of the body A before referred to into the threading slit E for the delivery passage. The thread opening 0' is in line with the tubular guide F and the tension of the thread draws it downward through the slits E and E into the guide or delivery passage F. 'As the thread is drawn along the guide F it will follow the curved portion of the slit E, pass under the retaining projection f and will then extend from the spindle to the delivery eye with but one bend. The thread opening 0 in plate 0 is of such depth that the thread will engage its inner edge and pass in a straight line directly through the guide F which forms the delivery passage, to the delivery eye. The projections f and f will effectually prevent the-thread from leaving the guide F and by the constructions just described a very ef ficient threading device is provided.
In Figs. 6 to 11 inclusive I have shown a slightly modified form of shuttle which is my preferred form. In this form the shuttle body is provided with a threading recess G forward of the spindle recess 9' and connected therewith bya notch g. The side wall g of the notch g is curved or inclined adjacent to the'top to assist in guiding the thread down into the notch as it is'drawn along. Athread delivery passage h extends from the front part of the threading recess G to the delivery eye of the shuttle which in this instance is located at the left instead of the right as in the other figure. In the thread passage h is a plate or guide H bent into the form of a tube but leaving a recess along the upper side for the admission of the thread.
In the threading recess isa plate K secured in position by screws or other means, said plate being shown in detail in Fig. 11. A forwardly extending portion 75 of the plate K is horizontal and lies just above a cut away portion 5 of the shuttle body S forward of the threading recess, the recessed portion having aninclined or curved wall conforming to the shape of this portion of the plate K and portion as shown to facilitate-the thread being drawn under said plate.
A vertical passage .9 communicates with the delivery passage H as shown in Fig. 10, and forms the threading slit therefor and also communicates with the space beneath the plate K. The plate K is also provided with a vertical portion 10 forming the front wall of the threading recess having a thread opening it running from one side nearly to the middle. The
inner edge of this thread opening adjoins the inner end of the thread delivery passage and communicates therewith. At the base of the vertical portion 10 of the plate K is a foot portion 10 provided with a retaining aperture by means of which it is securedin the bottom of the recess Gby a screw or pin, and the plate K is also provided with a rearwardly extending portion 70 in the plane of the portion k which is provided with a retaining aperture and also with a downwardly extending pro= jection k which is in line with the rear wall of the passage 8 of the shuttle, as shown in Fig. 10. A space is left between'the edge of of the passage 8'. These constructions insure the thread being drawn'into the delivery passage without being diverted or checked in any way.
I may provide the threading'recess G with a friction pad L of felt or other suitable material as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 if desired. The plate K can be stamped out in one piece ill'OTIl sheet material and bent into the desired orm. To thread the shuttle the thread is drawn forward until it is caught beneathlthe upturned edge 70' of the plate K, when it will slip under the plate and enter the threading slit la for the thread opening k It is then carried around toward the side in whichthe delivery eye is located, when it will enter the vertical threading slit 8 see Fig. 10, and drop into the thread delivery passage at the bottom of the same. The thread tube or delivery passage formed from the plate II is provided with a thread retaining projection h similar to the projection f in the delivery tube shown in Fig. 5, which prevents the thread from leaving the passage. After the thread has been drawn into the vertical passage s it will slide down the edge of the vertical portion 10 of the plate K through the threading slit in" between it and the side of the threading recess as indicated in Fig. 9 untilit engages the thread opening 10 when it will be drawn to the inner end of the said opening which is substantially in line with the spindle. The thread will engage the inclined side wall 9 of the notch g, as shown in Fig. 8, when it is first drawn forward, and
. will be guided into the said notch where it will be restrainedagainst too much vibration, as it passes from the end of the spindle.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shuttle body provided with a spindle recess and a threading recess forward of the spindle recess, a plate having a part forming the front Wall of the threading recess and provided with a thread opening, a thread delivery passage extending from said thread open: ing to the delivery eye of the shuttle, said plate having a part extending forward of the threading recess, the parts of the shuttle adjacent to said forwardly extending part of said plate being recessed to admit the passage of the thread from the said thread opening to the delivery passage, substantially as described.
2. A shuttle body provided with a spindle recess anda threading recess forward of the spindle recess, a'plate having a portion forming the front wall of said threading recess and provided with a thread opening, a thread delivery passage extending from said thread opening to the delivery eye of the shuttle, a threading slit for the thread opening, a thread ing slit for the thread delivery passage, said plate having a forwardly extending portion and the shuttle body being recessed beneath said forwardly extending portion and ad acent to its-edges to provide thread passages connecting the threading slit for the thread opening with the threading slit for the thread delivery passage, substantially as described.
