-' y, STRAINER.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER BRUCE VILLs, a citizen of theV United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements y in Strainers, of which the following is a speci ification.
This invention relates to strainers for kitchen use, and more particularly to strain? Valso rendered secure.
' Sil/H16 lVith the object stated'in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described' and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing- Y Figure 1 is a side elevation of the strainer; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is arry end view, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4-4 of Fig'l.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 10 denotes the foraminous body portion of the strainer, the same being cup-shaped as usual, and having a sheet metal top portion or rim 11, to which latter the screen material of which the body portion is composed is secured in any approved manner.
The rim 11 has a rolled edge 12, and below the latter is an indentation 13 extending entirely around the rim and defining an annular shoulder 14 which is located beneath the roll 12 and spaced therefrom. The spacing of the roll 12 and the shoulder 14 is such as to permit the seating of a handle attachment in the indentation 13.
The handle attachment referred to is a piece of wire which has its ends twisted together as shown at 15 to form a handle, the
of wood which is attached and secured to the twisted portion in any approved manner. The wire is also bent to form a ring 17 from which the handle 15 extends, this ring having a diameter to encircle the rim l11 at the indentation 13, and to seat snugly 1n the Specification of Let-ters Patent.
being provided with a hand grip 16- latter betweenthe roll 12 and the shoulder 14, said roll and shoulder serving to prevent upward or downward displacement of the ring. l
Diametrically Opposite the handle 15, the ringl 17 has two spaced outward bends 18 having a connecting portion 19 at their outer 1 ends, and these parts are turned down as shown in Fig. 1 at 20, to form a supporting hook by which latter and the handle V15, the
strainer vmay be supported on the edge of a y culinary vessel, said hook and handle seating on the edge of the vessel at diametricallyfop'- posite points.
In order to provide a rigid connection between the strainer and the hereinbefore described handle attachment, it is necessary that the ring 17 tightly encircle the rim 11 at the indentation 13. lThe ring 17 is usually applied by hand by being sprung over the shoulder 14 or the roll 12. However, this operation does not resultin a connection which is as tight and rigid as it should be, andhence the parts 18 have been provided and so arranged that they enable the ring to be contracted after it has been seated in the indentation 13. As the parts 18 are spaced, it will be obvious that when they are drawn closer together, the ring will be contracted somewhat or reduced in diameter,
and this is done by making a downward V.
shaped bend in the part 19, as shown in Fig. 3, which can be readily donc by suitably designed Vdies. When the V-shaped bend is made, the parts 18 are drawn together and the ring 17 is contracted until it tightly grips the indented party 13 of the rim 11 which it encircles, and the ring is now firmly attached to said rim.
The ring 17 can be very easily and quickly applied in the manner hereinbefore described, and the expedient is` simple and highly eiiicient.
I claim:
1. The combination with a strainer having a rim portion; of a wire ring encircling said rim portion and provided with a handle, said ring having a pair of -outward bends which are spaced and provided with a downturned connecting portion at their outer ends, saidconnecting portion forming a hook and being pliable to permit bending in a direction to draw the aforesaid outward bends together and thereby contract the ring.
