Description

The invention relates to special electrometallurgy.

A known method of heating the slag bath with an electric current using a non-consumable cooled metal electrode. However, especially when operating at alternating and direct current of reverse polarity, water-cooled metal electrodes undergo electrochemical destruction, which leads to contamination of the slag melt with foreign substances, as well as to a rapid failure of the electrode itself.

The aim of the invention is to protect the electrode from electrochemical destruction. This is achieved by the fact that a part of a non-consumable water-cooled metal electrode immersed in the melt is washed by gas streams (i.e. inert) under a pressure not lower than the hydrostatic pressure created by the melt column.

The drawing shows a diagram illustrating the proposed method.

In a part of a non-consumable cooled metal electrode I immersed in a slag melt, holes 2 are made, through which a gas, for example, argon, is fed into the zone adjacent to the electrode. The holes are placed along the entire plane of the part of the electrode immersed in the slag melt, which makes it possible to create a gas envelope around the electrode when gas is supplied through them.
