Abstract

1,043,653. Crimping pliers. AMP Inc. March 3, 1965 [March 11, 1964], No. 9020/65. Heading B4W. [Also in Division H2] In a tool for crimping an electrical connector defining a channel to a wire, a crimping die having a die cavity comprising a trough adapted to bend the side walls of the connector towards each other, the crimping die and an anvil being relatively movable towards one another, a shearing member is provided which is movable laterally of the axis of the trough and is adapted to trim the projecting ends of wires positioned in the cavity within the crimping die as the die is moved towards the connector and anvil to position the trimmed ends of the wires in the channel and to crimp the connector to the wires. An anvil block 40 carrying an integral projection 42 is secured in a recess 38 in the upper arm 36 of the C- shaped head of the tool. The anvil 42 cooperates with a crimping die assembly comprising a central die 52 and outer dies 54, 56 the dies 54, 56 being formed integrally with the die block 62 which is slidable in the head and secured to a reciprocable ram 30 which is advanced by a linkage on closure of the handles 20, 22 of the tool. The die 52 has a depending arm 76 which is slidable in a central groove 78 in the block 62, the die 52 being normally biased upwardly beyond the blocks 54, 56 by a spring 80. A pin 81 on the left-hand side of the die 52 extends laterally beyond the C-shaped head 32 for manual adjustment of the die 52 to allow the trough-like recesses in the dies 54, 56 to co-operate with the recess in die 52 so that an uncrimped connector may be positioned in the tool. A stop plate 84 prevents upward movement of the die 52 beyond the position seen in Fig. 8. The edges 94, 96 of the sides 73, 75 of the dies 54, 56, Fig. 5 (not shown), co-operate with edges 101 of the die 52 to form two pairs of shearing edges the die 52 acting as a shear block. The wires 16, 16<SP>1</SP> are passed through the trough in the die 54 beneath the surface 101 of the die 52, the wires 14, 14<SP>1</SP> being passed through the trough of the die 52, the wires 14, 14<SP>1</SP> being passed through the trough of the die 56 beneath the surface of 101 of the die 52. During initial movement of the ram 30 on closing the handles 20, 22 the dies 54, 56 move upwards until the underside of the die 52 is seated on the surface 77 of the block 62 and the wires are trimmed. As the dies continue their upward movement, the stop plate 84 is moved out of engagement with the surface 83 of the die 52 by the camming pin 90 so that all three dies move as a single unit to push the trimmed ends of the wires into the channel formed by the connector and crimp the connector to the wire. For use in crimping a U-shaped ferrule on the wire the die 56 is omitted. In a modification. Fig. 10 (not shown), only two dies are provided these being normally disposed in off-set relationship and means are provided for bringing the dies into alignment and thereby trimming the ends of the wires.
