Abstract
797,779. Making electrical connections; bending, shearing, jointing by stamping. AMP, Inc. June 8, 1956 [June 13, 1955], No. 17803/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Apparatus for applying an electrical connector 18, Fig. 14, having a ferrule-forming portion 24, to a conductor, comprises a first die set 92, 94, Fig. 1, adapted to curl the ferrule-forming portion about the conductor and form the ferrule, and a second die set 92, 116, Fig. 13, adapted to indent the ferrule on to the conductor. A continuous strip of connectors 18 with contact portions 28, Fig. 14, joined together by bridging pieces 20, is passed into a longitudinal slot 40 in the apparatus and is fed stepwise to the dies by a reciprocating slide 54 having a pivoted spring-loaded finger 72, Fig. 11 (not shown). The feed member is driven by a link 62 from a main press ram 16 or alternatively by a separate air driven unit. A cover block 80 biased downwardly by adjustable springs 84, presses on the strip, preferably only on the contact portions 28, to prevent its backward movement during retraction of the slide 54. The first die set comprises a curling die 92 detachably mounted on a main support slide 96 secured to the main press ram 16, and cooperating with a lower die 94 mounted in an aperture 100 of a main platform 101 hinged at one end 102 and biased upwardly at its other end against stops 130 by a spring 106. The second die set comprises an indenting die 116, Fig. 13, fixed to a base 14, Fig. 1, and cooperating with the curling die 92. Another curling die 90 secured to slide 94 curls a tab 26 of the connector on to the insulated portion of the conductor. A shear block 138, Fig. 5, actuated by a plunger 140 on the slide 96 is used to sever the bridging pieces 20 from the connectors. This shear block 138 co-operates with two shear blades 146, 148, Fig. 6, in the platform 101, and is mounted as a cantilever on a vertical slide 158, Fig. 5, having a projecting pin 162 for engagement with a two-part latch member 164 pivoted at 166 to the main slide 96. When the ram 16 is raised the latch lifts the pin 162 and hence raises the shear block from the connector. Subsequently a cap 168 on the latch engages a fixed roller 170 whereby the latch is pivoted out of engagement with the pin 162 which is moved downwardly by a spring 176 whereby the shear block engages the next connector which has meanwhile been fed forwardly to the dies where its contact portions 28 are located beneath a plate 132. The two parts of the latch are connected together by a spring 179 which yields if the shear block sticks. During the next downstroke and with a conductor positioned in the connector, the curling die 92 engages the ferrule portion 24 and curls it around the conductor, Fig. 13, and through a slot 32. The plunger 140 then engages the shear block and shears off the bridging-piece which falls through a passage 123, Fig. 6, on the platform and finally a surface 124 on the die 92 engages the die 94 and depresses it together with the platform 101 against spring 106 whereby the ferrule is indented and a lower tab 34 on the conductor clenched over by the die 116, Fig. 13. The slot 40, plate, 132 and dies 90, 92 may be varied to suit different connectors. The connector may be attached to the end of a conductor or remote from the end.
