In the following, the invention will be described in more detail as an example in connection with the drawings, of which
Flg. 1 er et perspektivriss av en presset elektrisk forbindelse, Follow 1 is a perspective view of a pressed electrical connection,
4) i armen 36. 5) av stansene 54 og 56 danner en spalte i hvilken stansen 52 Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a contact piece which is used to produce the connection shown in fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an end view of the connector in fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a tool for pressing electrical contact pieces, Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the head of the tool and shows the parts thereof at the beginning of a pressing operation, Fig. 6 is a similar view to fig. 5, but showing the parts during the pressing operation, Fig. 7 is a similar view to fig. 5, but shows the parts at the end of the pressing operation, Fig. 8 is a section along lines VII—VII in fig. 5, Fig. 9 is a similar view to that in fig. 5, but shows another method of using the tool, and Fig. 10 is a schematic perspective view showing a modification of the tool. Fig. 1 shows a pressed joint connection between a first pair of insulated wires 14 and 14' and a second pair of insulated wires 16 and 16', which connection is formed by means of an electrical contact piece 2. Before the pressing, the contact piece 2 is channel-shaped as shown in Fig. . 2, comprising an intermediate piece 4 with side walls 6 extending from opposite edges of the intermediate piece 4. A film 8 of the insulating material, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, on the outer surface of the contact piece 2 extends over the edges of the side walls 6. Two tongues 10 are bent up from the intermediate piece 4, each of which tongues 10 has two grooves 12. The press connection shown in fig. 1 is produced by placing the ends of the wires 14 and 14', respectively 16 and 16', between the side walls 6 and bending these side walls towards each other and towards the intermediate piece 4 to press the ends of the wire into the grooves 12 so that the sides of these grooves cuts through the insulation on the wires and forms a conductive connection with the electrically conductive cores in the wires. During the pressing operation, the insulating film 8 which extends over the upper (as seen in Fig. 3) edges of the side walls 6, is first downwards towards the intermediate piece together with the side walls and is gripped between the opposite surfaces of the side walls. A tool for creating an electrical connection in the manner described above will now be discussed with reference to fig. 4 to 8. The tool shown in fig. 4 comprises a fixed handle part 20 and a movable handle part 22. The upper (see Fig. 4) end 23 of the handle 20 has two side flanges 24 which accommodate a joint connection or turning mechanism, and between which the upper end of the handle 22 is stored at 26. Between the handles, a device 28 is arranged to ensure complete closure of the handle at the end of each pressing operation by means of the tool, which device 28 e.g. is of the type described in the U.S. patent 2 618 993. The tool has a mainly C-shaped head 32 with an upper (see fig. 4) arm 36 and a lower (see fig. 4) arm 34 which is arranged between the enemies 24 and is attached to these by of fasteners 33. A reciprocating piston 30 is displaceably arranged in a bore 29 (see Figs. 5 to 8) in the arm 34. The piston 30 is advanced (ie moved upwards in Figs. 4 to 8) when the handles 20 and 22 is closed, with the help of the aforementioned joint connection, but shall not be described in more detail here, as reference is made to U.S. patent document 3 029 670. As shown in fig. 8, the arm 36 forms a recess 38 in which a stop block 40 is arranged which is fixed in the recess by means of fasteners 44. The fastening member 44 extends through the block 40, through a plate 46 on the right (see fig. 5 to 7 ) side of the tool and held in place by a nut. The plate 46 is fixed to the arm 36 by means of screws (not shown) which are passed through the plate 46, through spacers 50 inserted between the arm 36 and the plate 46 and into openings 48 (Fig. 4) in the arm 36. A stop 42 protrudes on the underside of the block 40 and has a simple rectangular shape. The stop 42 is arranged to cooperate with a press punch unit which comprises a central press punch 52 and two outer punches 54 and 56 on each side of the punch 52. The punches 52, 54 and 56 have shaping surfaces arranged to bend the side walls 6 of the contact piece 2 towards each other and bend the side walls towards the intermediate piece 4 on the connector. The molding surfaces form a recess with a converging side 58, and the bottom of the recess is formed with arcuate grooves forming a ridge or groove 60, as shown in fig. 8. The punches 54 and 56 are designed in one piece with a punch block 62 which is displaceable along a contact surface 74 on the head 32. The block 62 has a side part 64 which lies above the upper (see Fig. 5 to 8) end of the piston 30 and is attached to the piston 30 by means of a coupling piece comprising a disc (not shown) which fits into a circular recess (not shown) on the underside of the side part 64 and is attached to this by means of a pin (not shown). A stem (not shown) extends from the underside of this disc into an axial bore (not shown) in the piston 30 and is attached to this by means of a pin 72. Opposite sides 73 and 75 (Fig. 5) of the punches 54 and 56 form a gap in which the punch 52
En arm 76 som stikker ned fra stansen 52 er glidbart opptatt i et sentralt spor 78 i blokken 62, idet stansen 52 normalt blir is movable, and the lower wall 77 in this gap serves as a stop for the punch 52 as will be described below. An arm 76 projecting down from the punch 52 is slidably engaged in a central groove 78 in the block 62, the punch 52 normally being
1 to 8) past the punches 54 and 56 by means of a spring 80 in a recess 79 in the arm 76 and which rests against the block 62. The punch is thus normally placed between
stansene 54 og 56 og anslaget 42. En pinne 81 på den venstre (se fig. 8) side av stansen 52 stikker sideveis forbi rammen 32 for å tillate ma-nuell justering av stansen 52 for å lokalisere et ikke presset kontaktstykke i verktøyet. the punches 54 and 56 and the stop 42. A pin 81 on the left (see Fig. 8) side of the punch 52 projects laterally past the frame 32 to allow manual adjustment of the punch 52 to locate an unpressed connector in the tool.
A stop plate 84 in a groove 82 on the block 40 is arranged to prevent upward (see fig. 8) movement of the punch 52 past the position in which this punch is shown in fig. 8. The plate 84 projects downwards (see fig. 8) past the stop 42 and rests against a surface 83 on the punch 52 when the parts of the tool are in the position shown in fig. 8. The plate 84 has an opening that is oversized in relation to a pin 88 that sticks through it and is attached to the block 40. Attached to the pin 88 is an arc-shaped spring 86 that presses the plate 84 against the bottom of the groove 82.
The lower end of plate 84 can be pivoted to the left (see Fig. 8) to allow punch 52 to be moved toward block 40 to perform a pressing operation.
As mentioned, the plate 84 is swung to the left by means of a cam pin 90 with an inclined cam surface 92 which, during upward movement (see fig. 8) of the punch 54 comes into contact with the plate 84. As can best be seen from fig. 5, the right side 98 of the punch 52 lies substantially in the same plane as the adjacent side 73 of the punch 54. The left side 100 of the punch 52 lies substantially in the same plane as the adjacent side 75 of the punch 56. As a result of this, the respective edges 94 and 96 of the sides 73 and 75 of the respective punches 54 and 56 cooperate with the lower (see Fig. 5) edges 101 of the punch 52 to form two pairs of cutting edges, the punch 52 working as a cutting or cutting block. The undersides 102 and 104 of the punches 54 and 56 are bevelled downwards (see Figs. 5 to 7).
With the punches positioned as shown in fig. 4, the punch 52 is withdrawn by pushing in the pin 81 and an unpressed contact piece 2 is placed between the punches and the stop 42, with the intermediate piece 4 lying against the stop 42. The punch 52 is then allowed to return to its original position under impact of the spring 80 to hold the contact piece in the tool, between the punch 52 and the stop 42 as shown in fig. 8. The wires 16 and 16', (of which only the wire 16 is shown), are then passed through the recess in the punch 54 below the surface 101 of the punch 52 and above the surface 104. The wires 14 and 14' (of which only the wire 14 is shown) are similarly passed from the left (see Fig. 5) through the recess in the punch 56, below the surface 101 of the punch 52 and above the surface 102 of the punch 54. The handles are then closed to advance the piston 30 from the position in which this is shown in fig. 5, to the position shown in fig. 7. During the initial movement of the piston 30, the spring 80 is compressed so that the punch 52 does not move together with the piston, due to the presence of the stop plate 84. The punches 54 and 56 are consequently moved upwards (see Fig. 6) in relation to the punch 52 until the underside of the punch 52 comes into contact with the surface 77 of the block 62. During the part of the tool's working operation just described, the wires 16 and 16' are cut between one of the edges 101 and the edge 94, while the wires 14 and 14 ' at the same time the cut is made between the other of the edges 101 and the edge 96, so that the cut ends 15 and 17 (of which only two are shown) of the wires fall out of the tool. When the punches 54 and 56 are moved from the one in fig. 6 showed the position of that in fig. 7, the plate 84 is moved out of contact with the surface 83 by means of the cam pin 90 so that all three punches are brought into alignment with each other, the underside of the punch 52 resting against the surface 77 so that when the piston 30 continues to advance, all three punches are moved together as a single unit to push the severed ends of the wires 14 and 14', 16 and 16' respectively, into the channel formed by the connector, then to compress the connector in cooperation with the stop 42, over the wires to form a connection as shown in fig. 1. The handles 20 and 22 which have been released by the device 28 are now opened to return or revert the piston 30 to its original position, and the pressed connection is removed from the area between the stop block 42 and the punches by depressing the pin 81.
9) over flaten 104 på stansen 56. Reference must now be made to fig. 9 which shows how the tool just described can be used to perform a branch connection. It must be assumed that a branch line 116 must be connected to a continuous line 118 by means of the described connector. The wire 118 is placed between the side walls 6 of the connector and between the forming surfaces of the punch 52, while the wire 116 is placed between the forming surfaces of the punch 54 and is led downwards (see fig. 9) over the surface 104 of the punch 56. When closing the handles, the wire 116 is cut off between one of the edges 101 and the edge 94, and is led into the channel formed by the contact piece when the punches 54 and 56 are advanced flush with the punch 52. The pressing operation is then completed by cooperation between the punches and the stop 42 in the same way as described above with reference to fig. 1 to 8.
Fig. 10 shows a modification of the tool, in which only two punches 106 and 108 are arranged, and these are normally placed in a mutually offset relationship. There are arranged means (not shown) to move the punch 108 to the left (see Fig. 10) to match the punch 106, as there are also arranged means to move the punches 106 and 108 as a unit towards a stop 110 after these punches have been brought into alignment with each other. A wire 112 is placed in the punch 108 and a wire 114 in the punch 106. By moving the punch 108 to the left, the ends of the wires 112 and 114 are cut between the punches 106 and 108, and by the aforementioned movement of these punches as a single unit, the cut ends of the wires are led into the channel formed by the connector, which is then pressed against the wires between the punches 106 and 108 and the stop 110.
I dette tilfelle kan verktøyet være A tool of the type described can be used not only for joint connections of the type described, but also for other connections, e.g. crimping a connector of the usual type having an annular tongue and a conventional U-shaped crimp sleeve for a wire end.
