Abstract

Cold sealing plastics or elastomer films, or plastics- or elastomer-coated paper, are produced by applying a discontinuous cold sealing coating, defined as being such that only when brought into contact with a similar coating and pressure applied, sealing occurs between the two coatings without applying heat, onto a plastics or elastomer film, or plastics-or elastomercoated paper, by means of an etched or engraved roller, the cold sealing coating being of a natural rubber dispersed in a cyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon e.g. xylene or a toluol. The film may be a polyethylene, polypropylene, regenerated cellulose, or a rubber hydrochloride film. A six-colour intaglio printing press may be used to print five colours and in the same operation applying the cold-sealing coating in the sixth inking device.
