One of these plate cylinders likewise is capacitated to hold either a narrow or a wide set of plates, and the other plate cylinder having means for holding a narrow set of plates andalongside thereof means for A holding devices for printing a late news strip or sealing strip upon and adjacent to the edge of a wide web. 15

The color supplement web is passed through both of the units and is printed in one color on one side and in black and three colors on the other side. In regular editions each couple perfects Aits own wide web, and the extra color plate cylinder may be used to print the late news or sealing strip, as elsewhere fully described.

It will be understood that the foregoing general description and the following detailed description are-exemplary and explanatory of the invention but are not restrictive thereof.

Referring now in detail to the embodiment of the invention, illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, one embodiment of the invention is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Two printing units 6 and 7 are shown, adapted to cooperate to perfect a web in multicolor, or, alternatively, each is capacitated to perfect a web in one color. The webs may thereafter be associated and otherwise handled-as desired.

The printing unit '7 comprises one printing couple having a plate cylinder l0 and a coacting impression cylinder 10",'l and the other printing couple comprises an impression cylinder lla and two coacting plate cylinders 11 and 12. The term printing couple is used in the sense of coacting cylinders capable of printing one side of a web.

The printing unit 6 is of similar construction and arrangement, one printing couple comprising an impression cylinder 13a and a plate cylinder 13, and the other printing couple comprising an impression cylinder 14* and two coacting plate cylinders 14 and 15. y

Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom. or may be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.

The accompanying drawings referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one elnbodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to .explain the principles of the invention.

An object of the invention is to provide a press of relatively few members and of simple and compact construction for printing either multi-color supplements or webs in one color and optionally printing a late news or sealing strip along the edge of a wide web or along the edges of the two halves of a wide web, the press having also a .capacity for straight or collected runs and for printing on dierent width webs.

More particularly the invention provides a simple and compact press adapted optionally to run a straight color supplement on a narrow width web, or to run regular editions on a plurality of webs, utilizing some of the color plate cylinders for printing one or more late news or sealing strips when the regular editions are run.

As exemplarily embodied, the press has two, or a plurality of, perfecting printing units, each unit devices may be employed as found necessary or desirable in handling webs of different widths or diierent numbers, and in producing various desired products.

In Fig. 5 the exempliiied press is shown arranged to print in multicolor, Iwhich is usually done on a narrow web, as in printing the ordinary color supplement. The web 8 passes through the printing couple 10, l()a and is printed in black on one side and it then passes over guide rollers 16, 17 and 18, through the printing couple 11, 11a, 12 and is printed in two colors on the other side. The web then passes 'to the printing couple 142', i4, 15 and is printed in two more colors on the iast-mentioned side, thus perfecting the web in black cn one side and in black .and three colors on the opposite side.

To perfect a web in one color in either oi the printing units, and ii no late news or sealing strip is printed, the 'web is passed ior instance through the printing couple 10, itl to be printed on one side and through the printing couple 11B, 1l, l2 to be printed upon the opposite side. In this case the cylinder l2 would not be plated. The cylinder l2 could be plated to print a tint or an additional color.

In accordance with one feature of the invention, when a web is perfected in one color, the extra plate cylinder, such as the cylinder 12, is utilized for printing a late news strip or sealing strip adjacent to and along the edge of a wide web, which has been perfected in one color by the other impression and plate cylinder of the unit. With this in view, the cylinder 12 is provided with means for holding a set oi narrow plates, as in color printing, together with means for holding a plate for printing a late news strip or sealing strip. This cylinder can also carry a plate for printing a second late news strip alongside and at or near the middle of, the web, the web being usually slit and associated and folded.

The other printing unit can be run in like manner, and the two webs can be associated if desired at the guiding roller i8, or elsewhere as desired, and the associated webs may be slit or turned, or both, as desired, being then directed to the folder.

Suitable printing plates, varying in size for wide and narrow webs, and oi suitable number for the particular press, will be employed, and these may be widely varied with different embodiments of the invention. The embodiment of late news or sealing strip imprinting means may likewise be widely varied as may be found desirable.

The impression and plate cylinders of the printing units are shown in Fig. 5 only conventionally, and may be of any known or suitable construction, and the wide and narrow plating of the cylinders may be edected by any desired means. Accordingly, the plate holding and adjusting means employed on the plate cylinders to hold either narrow or wide plates, for the color supplement or straight editions, may be of any known or other suitable form.

As previously indicated, in accordance with certain features of the invention,

12 and 15 are used to take the narrow plating for printing color supplements and for carrying alongside thereof the means for printing the late news or sealing strips on regular runs. Accordingly, in the embodied means for holding the narrow set of color plates, cylinder 12 is provided with a usual iixed plate clamp 21, extending circumferentially and centrally of the cylinder, which cooperates with movable clamps 22, of

, usual manner.

Cylinder 12 is also provided with movable plate clamps 26 and with adjustable clamps 27 which secure

28 and 29 on the cylinder. Clamps 27 are resiliently urged inwardly by means of screw rods 30 and nuts 3l which c ompress springs 32 against the lock-up 'plate 33. When using the cylinder for straight color runs, plate 28 is pressed inwardly by clamps 27 and, in turn, presses clamps 26 inwardly to secure plate 29 on the cylinder between clamps 21 and 26.

Clamps 34 are fastened to the cylinder near its end by screws 35. Clamps 27 are moved outwardly of the cylinder to secure the marginal or seal strip plate 36 between them and the clamps 34, 'as shown in Figure 2. For

this purpose, compression springs 3'7 surround screw rods 30 and are pressed against the clamps 27 by nuts 38 slidable in the grooves 39.y

When a second seal strip is to be printed on the other longitudinal half of the web, as shown in Figure 2, a dummy plate 40 may be used, and a plate 41 is formed with a printing surface comprising only the seal strip 42 and margin strip 43. These plates are secured to this half oi' the cylinder by plate clamps 21, 22, and 23. This arrangement of the plates places the seal strip in the same relative position on one hah the web, as that of plate 36 on the other half of the web.

The invention in its broader aspects is not limited tc the specific mechanisms shown and described but departures may be made therefrom within the scope orn the accompanying claims without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacriiicing its chiei' advantages. The term "blach as used in thespecincation and claims denotes a single color, which, however, is usually black.

What I claim is:-

l. A printing cylinder for a rotary newspaper press for printing in multi-color or alternatively perfecting a web and printing a marginal seai strip, said printing cylinder having a pair of fixed plate securing means and a. movable plate clip to clamp a plate between it and either ixeri plate securing means.

2. A printing cylinder for a rotary newspaper press for printing in multi-color or alternatively perfecting a web and printing a. marginal seal strip, said printing cylinder having a pair of xed plate securing means on said cylinder and a movable plate clip normally positioned closely adjacent to one of the iixed plate securing means to clamp a full page plate between it and a xed securing means or a. narrow plate between it and the other xed securing means.
