Abstract

340,607. Printing- machines. MORRIS, E. T., 109, Borough Road, London. Oct. 3, 1929, No. 30065. [Class 100 (i).] Delivery apparatus ; associating - apparatus ; cutting-apparatus.-In a rotary printing-press, means are provided for slitting the printed webs, superposing the parts of each web by turner-bars K, L, further slitting the half-width webs, and superposing the slit parts of the half-width web by additional turner-bars N, N<1> ... Q, Q<1>, the slitters and turner-bars being so arranged that the webs can be forwarded to a longitudinal-folder mechanism V either direct from the first slitters and turner-bars or after having been further slit and superposed. By this means, products of different page size but having an inversely proportional number of pages, may be produced. As applied to producing a newspaper of twenty-four pages, three rotary perfecting presses A, B, C are used, and each press has slitting-discs M and turner-bars K, L corresponding thereto. Each printed web is slit by the discs M and one part superposed on the other by the bars K, L. The six half-width webs from the three machines pass direct to and are associated at a guide-roller Y, and are then folded longitudinally by the former V. From the former, the webs pass to cutting, transverse folding, and delivery mechanism in the usual way. For producing a thirty-two page product of smaller size for, say, a telephone directory, only two of the presses, namely, A, C, are employed. Each printed web is slit at M, and the two parts superposed by the bars K, L but not associated. The upper part is again slit by discs R and the two smaller parts are superposed by turner-bars N, N<1> and 0, O<1> respectively. The lower part is similarly treated by discs S and turner-bars P, P<1>, Q Q<1>. A similar arrangement of slitters T, U and turnerbars N, N<1> . . . Q, Q<1> is provided for dealing with the web from the press C and the whole of the webs are associated in superposed relation over the roller Y before passing to the former V and sheet-cutting, folding, and delivery devices.
