. COMPOUND PRINTING-MACHINE.
Patented Dec. 5, 1905.
' double printing-couple each consisting of two form and four impression cylinders, combmed wlth an auxlhary prlntlng couple conslstlng of three Impression-cylinders and five form-cylinders for printing a plurality of colors on a single web. The number and ar' rangement 0 couples may, however, bevaried within the scope of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side elevation of the machine; Fig. 2, a diagrammatic sect-ion on theline 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a diagram in side elevation of a modification. plan of a form-cylinder.
Referring to the drawings, A is a web-roll of paper passing over the rollers 1 and 2 to impression-cylinder Band is printed on its .first side by form-cylinder F, thence over the rollers 3 and 4 to impression cylin'der G and is printed on its opposite side by form-cylinder H, thence Over the roller 5 to the turningbars 6 to the rollers-100 and 101, where 'it meets the web A. I This web passes from its roll over the rollers 7 and 8 to impressioncylinder I and is printed on its first side by form-cylinder J. Thence it passes over the rollers 9 and 10 to impression-cylinder K and is printed on its opposite side by form-cyliri der L, thence over the roller 11 to the turning-bars 12, whence it meets the web A between the rollers 100 and 10-1. Thence both goto the longitudinal folding and transverse cutting mechanism T, making two copies of sixteen-page papers.
The auxiliary printing mechanism consists of three impression-cylinders and five form-cylinders, all in horizontal rows, their Fig. 4 is a axes being parallel and one above the other.
Referring thereto, the web C passes over the roller 14 and under roller 15 to impressionoylinder a and is given one impression by form-cylinder b, thence to impression-cylinder 0 and is again printed upon by form-cylinders d and e, thence passes between impression-cylinder (I/ and form-cylinder f and is printed again on the same side, thence passes between impression-cylinder g and form-cylinder h and is printed on its opposite side, thereby printed in four colors on one side and black or single color on the opposite side.
Thence it passes over the roller 16, under the.
bar 29, and between the rollers 18 and 19, thence'over rollers 20 and 22. The web having been slit by the slitters 21, passes between the rollers 22 and 23, one half passing and the other half under the roller 24, over roller 25, under roller 27, and over the turning-bar 28, whence it meets the webs A and over roller 26 to the longitudinal folder The web of roll B, placed at the side of the main press, passes over a roller '30 and bar 31 to roller 32, thence to impression-cylinder M, and is printed upon by form-cylinder E, thence over the roller 32 and under roller 33 to impression-cylinder N, and is printed upon its opposite side by form-cylinder H, thence over the roller 34, slit by the slitter 35, thence over the super osing-bars 36, under the roller 37, and over ro ler 38, where it meets the web B. This web passes from its roll over the roller 39 to the bar 40 at the side of the press and under roller 41 to impression-cylinder O, and is printed upon by form-cylinder J,
thence over. the roller 42, under roller 43 to impression-cylinder P, where it is printed upon its opposite side by form-cylinder L,
thence under the roller 44, and is slit by the slitter 45, thence over the superposing-bars 46 and under the .roller 47 .and between the rollers '38 and 26, where it meets the web B printing mechanism may print a single web and one half of the slit web 0, thence to the with two colors on both of its sides by the modification shown by the dotted lines C in Fig. 1, indicating the run of the web through the auxiliary press and folding mechanism before described by withdrawing the gear 49, thereby leaving the lower printing mechanism g and h idle.
Referring now especially to Fig. 1, the
auxiliary printing mechanism when in full operation may be used only for adding multiples of two pages to the main printing mechanism by slitting the websviz., by one-half-width web I add two pages to each web, making eighteen page papers. By usin a three-fourths web I add six pages to the ower webs, makin twenty-two-page papers. By using a fulI-width web I add four pages to each web, making twenty pages. By using a full-width web and slitting it at 17 and turning it over the bars 29 I add eight pages, making twenty-four pages for the two lower webs, all passing over the longitudinal folder R. It is obvious that all sixteen-page products may pass over the folders at the side and end of the press and a supplement in colors over the folder S from one auxiliary press.
The folding mechanism may be that fully shown and illustrated in United States patent to me, No. 701,699, dated June 3, 1902.
In Fig. 3 I show a view of the auxiliary press when not used in color-printing. By withdrawing the intermediate gear 48 I use only the impression-cylinders a and g and the form-cylinders f and h, each plate-cylinder holding eight plates and four pages wide, thereby adding two, four, six, or eight pages to the main press without colors.
It is also understood that the plate-cylinders are four plates wide, with their columnrules parallel to the longitudinal run of the web, as shown in Fig. 4 in which the forms are indicated at but they may, however, have the column-rules parallel to the axis of the form-cylinders, if desired.
The gears 200 and 201 can be withdrawn to allow the upper or lower printing mechanism to be used separately or with the auxiliary printing mechanism, if desired.
It is to be understood that each double printing-couple prints a full-width web of two copies of eight pages. When using a one-fourth-width web, you add two pages, making ten-page products, or onehalfwidth web twelve pages, or three-fourth-width web fourteen pages, or a double-width sixteen pages. WVith all can also be had a colored supplement from the auxiliary printing-coules.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, two double printing mechanisms each consisting of two form and four impression cylinders, arranged one ab ve the other, each mechanism to print upon a plurality of webs in one color, making a total capacity of four webs for the two mechanisms, an auxiliary printing mechanism consisting of a plurality of im )ression and form cylinders "00 print a plurality of colors on a single web, and means for guiding the webs from one set of cylinders to another.
2. In combination, two double printin mechanisms each consisting of two form and four impression cylinders, arranged to print upon four webs, an auxiliary multicolor printing mechanism set at the end in alinement with the other mechanisms, all cylinders being parallel and in horizontal rows to print a plurality of webs in one color and a single web in colors, and means for guiding the webs from one set of cylinders to another.
3. In combination, two double printin mechanisms each consisting of two form anc four impression cylinders, each mechanism being arranged to print and perfect a plurality of webs, an auxiliary printing mechanism to print a plurality of colors on a single web, means for guiding the webs from one set of cylinders to another, and means to associate and fold the Webs.

5. In a printing machine, a perfectin printing mechanism constructed to print an perfect two webs, comprising two spaced sets standing side by side, each having one form and two impression cylinders, means for guiding webs from one set to the other, and means to deliver one web from between the sets and at the side of the machine, and to deliver the otherat the end of the machine.
6. In a printing-machine, the combination with double perfecting printing mechanisms comprising two spaced sets standing side by side and constructed to print four webs and to associate and deliver two thereof from the end and two from the side of the machine between the sets, and means for guiding webs from one set to another, of an auxiliary webperfecting mechanism, and means to slit and associate the web from the latter mechanism with the side and end deliveries respectively from the other mechanisms.
7. In a printing mechanism, in combination, a plurality of web-perfecting printin couples in the same frame, means to gui e Webs from one couple to another, folding and In testimony whereof I have signed my cutting mechanisms at the end and side of name to this specification in the presence of said frame, means to deliver part of said two subscribing Witnesses.-
