Description

Dec. 31, 1935. H. A. w. WOOD PRINTING PRESS Original Filed March 5, 1931 A TTORNEY Patented Dec. 31, 1935 UNETED STATZI;
PRINTHNG PRESS ienry A. Wise Wood, New York, N. Y., assignor to Application March 5, 1931, Serial No. 520,292 Renewed May 21, 1935 8 Claims.
The present invention relates to web printing presses and particularly to a novel combination of single impression and multiple impression printing mechanism.
An object of the invention is to provide a novel means for printing a web in one color on one face and in a plurality of colors on the other face.
In my copending application, Serial No. 512,- 029, filed January 29, 1931, I describe the combination of a single impression perfecting press unit and a multiple impression unit, both adapted to print the same web, but in such a manner that the web will be printed in one color, say black, on each face thereof, and also in a plurality of colors on one of said faces.
The present invention provides a variation therefrom in the form of a unit comprising a single printing couple which prints one face of the web, while a set of plate cylinders with a single impression cylinder therefor, prints the other face of the Web.
h Another object of the invention is to provide a plurality of such units with means for collecting webs printed thereby and feeding the webs to a single folder.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for reversing the lead of a web through a unit whereby the multi-color impressions may be made on one or the other face of each web, as desired.
With these and other objects in view, I shall now describe an embodiment of my invention and thereafter will point out the novelty and scope of the invention in the claims.
The accompanying drawing shows a diagrammatic side elevation of a web printing press comprising a plurality of printing units each having a single impression and a multiple impression printing set together with means for varying the lead of the web through the units.
The printing press illustrated in the drawing comprises a bed plate if! on which are mounted a number of printing couples G and H, only two of which are shown in the drawing. Directly above these units are mounted multiple impression sets M and N. The printing couple G comprises an impression cylinder 30 and plate cylinder 3|, the latter being inked with an inking system 32. The multiple set M comprises an impression cylinder 33 with which cooperates a set of plate cylinders 34, 35, 36 and 3?. Each of the latter plate cylinders is provided with its own inking system 38. The printing couple H is substantially identical with the printing couple G and the multiple sets M and N are substantially alike.
A web g is led from a roll 40 over a guide roll M to the right of the printing couple 3El3l, as viewed in Fig. 3, and after passing through said couple, is guided by rolls 42 and 43 to the impression cylinder 33, about which it passes in counterclockwise direction. Thence the web is guided by rolls i l, 35, d6, M and 38 to a drag roll 49 where it is slit into half webs g and g by means of a slitter roll 50. The half web 9 is turned under the half web g by means of turnings bars 5i and then the two half webs after being brought into mutual register by compensating rolls 53 are led to the drag roll 5% of the folder J.
A web h is passed through the unit H-N in reverse direction to that of the web 1 through the unit G-M. In other words, instead of passing about guide rolls iil4l at the right hand side of the printing couple, it is led about rolls iila and Alla at the left of the printing couple H. Then after passing between the impression and plate cylinders of the couple H it is led about rolls 45 and M to the impression cylinder 33 of the set N passing around said impression cylinder in clockwise direction. Thereafter, it is guided by means of rolls d3, 42, 55 and 55 to a drag roll 5?. Here the web It is slit by a slitter roll 58 into half webs h and k and the two half webs after being brought into proper register are led to the drag roll 5 of the folder J.
It will be observed that in this arrangement which is shown by full lines in Fig. 3, the multicolor impressions will be found on the under face of the half webs g and g as they enter the folder, while the multi-color impressions will be found on the upper face of the half webs h and h as they enter the folder. If desired, the web 91 instead of pursuing the lead illustrated by full lines, may pursue the course indicated by broken lines, whereby it passes in reverse direction through the printing couple 30-45! and thence runs clockwise about the impression cylinder 33 of the unit M. On emerging from the unit M, it is carried about rolls @2- and 46 to the drag roll 57, where it is slit with the web it and is assembled therewith in the folder J. As a result of this arrangement the multi-color impressions will be on the upper face of the half webs g and g as they enter the folder.
Similarly, the web h may be run in reverse direction through the unit IIN, as indicated by broken lines, so that the multi-color impressions will be formed on the under side of the half webs h and 71. as they enter the folder. It will thus be seen that I provide means for impressing the webs individually with color on either face thereof, as desired.
In order to reverse the plate cylinders 3| and the plate cylinders 34, 35, 36 and 31 it is necessary to reverse the inking systems 32 and 38 without reversing the fountain rolls 6B of each printing system. To this end a pair of transfer rolls 6! are provided in each inking system. These rolls are adjustable between the position shown in full lines in the drawing and that shown in broken lines. Each fountain roll 60 and each pick-up roll 62 run continuously in one direction, being driven by the usual means (not shown). The distributor rolls 53 and E4 must reverse their direction of rotation with each reversal of the plate cylinder which is inked by them. In one direction of ro tation of the plate cylinder the feed of ink is from the pick-up roll 62 through the two transfer rolls 6! in series to the roll 83 and thence by Way of rolls 64 to the plate. In the opposite direction of rotation of the plate roll, the feed of ink from the pick-up roll to the roll 63 is effected by only one of the transfer rolls I, the other being idle. Thus a continuous ink feed is supplied which may be reversed by the transfer rolls to conform to the direction of rotation of the plate roll.
It will be understood that the embodiments of my invention described above are to be taken as illustrative and not limitative of my invention, and that I reserve the right to make such changes in form, construction and arrangement of parts as fall within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
