2 Claims.
In high speed rotary web presses where quick drying inks are used in the printing units it is usual to provide drying units to dry the freshly printed web after it leaves the printing units.
These drying units usually dry the ink by evaporation-and, in any event, through the application to the web of a considerable degree of heat by means of gas burners, steam drums, or the like, in combination with a cooling means. Under this treatment the web has a tendency to shrink so that due to the increase in tension there is less paper being presented to the second printing unit than was presented to the first printing unit. Therefore, if the corresponding form and impression cylinders of the printing units are made exactly the same size and the plates and makeready bear the same relation to the bearers of the respective cylinders, the web will either break or run under suchextreme tension that it will wrinkle badly and otherwise interfere with the color register in the second printing unit.
The object of my invention is to provideaccurate register in a rotary web printing press in the second printing unit, said unit comprising an impression cylinder and form cylinders therefor, the diameters of said cylinders being slightly less than the diameters of the corresponding cylinders of the first printing unit.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic representation of a side elevation of so much of a printing 'press as will give an understanding of my invention.
In the form shown, the first printing unit is cylinder being denoted by I and its five form cylinders by 2, 3, l, 5 and 6. Inking mechanisms for the form cylindersare denoted by 2 3, 4 5 and 6, and apply the ink to their respective form cylinders in the usual manner.
The second printing unit for perfecting the web is herein represented as a five color unit, the impression cylinder being denoted by l and its five form cylinders by 8.8, Ill, II and I2; the diameters of the impression and form cylinders of this second printing unit are slightly less than the diameters of the corresponding cylinders of the first printing unit; The inking mechanisms for the form cylinders of the second printing unit are denoted by 8?, 9, l0, H and I2, and apply the ink to their respective form cylinders in the usual manner.
The first drying unit is herein represented as comprising a heating unit I3, such as a gas burner and two cooling cylinders I4 and I5.
The second drying unit is herein represented as comprising a heating unit l6, such as a gas burner and two cooling cylinders l7 and i8.
These two I drying units are provided with shields l9 and 20 in order that the vapors arising from drying the web may be easily disposed of and dissipated by blower or auction devices ii, 22 so that the vapors will not again come in contact with the printed surface of the web.
Any heating medium, such as gas, may be applied to the heating units i3, i6, and any suitable cooling medium, such as cold water, may be supplied to cooling cylinders l4, l5 and i1, ill.
The web may be fed from the supply roll 23 in any well known or approved manner.
In operation, the web is led from the supply roll to and through the first printing unit where it is printed in multicolor on the first side thereof then to and through the heating unit l3 and around the cooling cylinders i8, i5 of the first drying unit. From theme the web is led to and through the second printing unit where it is printed in multicolor on the second side thereof, then to and through the heating unit l6 and around the cooling cylinders 11, it of the second printing unit. The perfected web may then pass in any desired direction to a delivery point.
The means for driving the several'units is not shown or described herein but any well known or approved means may be used. Itwill be understood that either of the units may be driven separately either for the purpose of making-ready or for any other purpose.
V It is to be understood that guide rolls are provided for passing the web from the supply roll in prescribed paths to and through the several units and to a predetermined delivery point.
While I have shown and described five form cylinders for each printing unit, it is evident that if so desired, one or more of the form cylinders may be silenced in the usual manner.
Also, while I have shown drying units for each printing unit it is obvious that the second drying unit may be eliminated if so desired.
It is to be understood that any well known or approved quick drying inks may be used in the printing press. 4
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided not; only a simple but effective means whereby register may be efiected inthe second printing unit with a minimum of effort by making the cylinders thereof slightly smaller than the corresponding cylinders of the first printing unit. 1
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is:
1. In a rotary web printing press, first and second printing units, each printing unit comprising an impression cylinder and form cylinders, and means for drying the web after it leaves the first printing unit, the diameters of the impression and form cylinders of the second printing unit being slightly less than the diameters of the corresponding impression and form cylinders of the first printing unit.
2. In a. rotary web printing press, first and second printing units, each printing unit comprising an impression cylinder and form cylinders, means I for drying the web after it leaves both the first and second printing units, the diameters of the impression and form cylinders of the. second printing unit being slightly less than the diameters of the corresponding impression and form 10 cylinders of the first printing unit.
HOWARD M. BARBER.
