In high speed web perfecting rotary presses where quick drying inks and web heating and cooling units are employed, it is very desirable that the several units be so located with respect to each other as to produce the best results while occupying a minimum amount of space.
The object of my invention is to so locate the printing and combined heating and cooling units, the web supply roll and the delivery, that the web can be fed and printed and the inks dried with a minimum travel of the web.
My invention comprises, generally, first and second multicolor printing units, arranged side by side at one end of the press in substantially the same horizontal plane, each printing unit consisting of an impression cylinder and form cylinders arranged partway around the same;
first andsecgmd combined heating and cooling units in substantially the same horizontal plane located side by side above the printing units, each combined heating and cooling unit comprising a heating cylinder and one or more cooling cylinders and a web supply roll located in line with the first printing unit and first heating and cooling unit and below said first heating and cooling unit; means being provided for passing the web from the supply roll to and through the first units, then around turning bars to and through the second units, and finally delivering the web at the other end of the press in line with the second printing unit.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, in
which Fig. 1 represents a diagrammatic top plan view; and
Fig. 2 represents a similar view in side elevation.
The first printing unit is herein represented.
as a five color unit, the impression cylinder being denoted by I and its five form cylinders by 2, 3, 4, 5,6, which form cylinders are arranged partway around the impression cylinder I. The inking mechanisms for the form cylinders are denoted by 2a, 3a, 4a., 5a, 6a.. The second printing unit for perfecting the web is herein represented as a five color unit, the impression cylinder being denoted by I and its five form cylinders by 8, 9, in, II, l2, which form cylinders are arranged partway around the impression cylinder I. The inking mechanisms for the form cylinders are denoted by 8a, 9a, Illa, Ila, I2a.
These two printing units are arranged side by side at one end of the press in substantially the same horizontal plane. The first combined heat- (c1. lop-119) ing' and cooling unit is herein represented as comprising a. large heating cylinder l3 and two small cooling cylinders l4, 15, arranged at one side of the heating cylinder (preferably the side toward the first printing unit) and spaced the 5 required distance-apart.
The second combined heating and cooling unit is herein represented as comprising a large heating cylin'der l6 and two small cooling cylinders I'I, ll, arranged at one side of the heating cylinder (preferably the side toward the second printing unit) and spaced the required distance apart.
These two combined heating and cooling units are located side by side in substantially the same horizontal plane above their respective printing units.
The web supply roll is denoted by I9 and it is located in line with the first printing unit and the first combined heating and cooling unit, and below the first heating and cooling unit.
The web is led through the press as follows: The unprinted web passes from the supply roll I9, to and through the first printing unit where the web is printed in multicolor upon one side thereof. The web is thenled to and and around the heating cylinder l3 and cooling cylinders it,
I 5 of the first combined heating and cooling unit. From thence the webis led around a turning bar 20 laterally to and around a second turning bar 2|. From thence the web is led to and through the second printing unit and from there to and around the heating cylinder l6 and cooling cylinders ll, it of the second combined heating and cooling unit. From thence the perfected web is delivered at the other end of the press in line with the second printing unit and second combined heating and cooling unit.
The means for driving the several units is not shown or described herein, it being understood that the first and second units may be driven separately either for the purpose of making ready or for permitting a single or two separate non-perfected multicolor products to be produced.
- i It will also be understood that any well known or approved quick drying may be used in'the printing units.
combined heating and cooling units located side by side, .a web supply roll'located in line with the first printing and first heating and cooling units, and means for leading the web through the first and second'units and delivering the web.
' 2. In a web perfecting rotary press, first and second multicolor printing units located side by side at one end of the press, first and second combined heating and cooling units locatedside by side, a web supply roll located in line with the first printing and first heating and cooling units, and means for leading the web through the first and second units and delivering the web at the opposite end of the press-in line with the second printing and second heating and cooling units.
3. In 'a web perfecting rotary press, first and second multicolor printing units located side by side at one end or the press, first and second combined heating and cooling units located side by side, a web supply roll located in line with the first printing and first heating and cooling units and below'the first heating and cooling unit, and
'means for leading the web through the first and second units and delivering the web.
4. In a web perfecting rotary press, first and second multicolor printing units located side by side at one end 0! the press, first and second combined heating and cooling units located side by side, a web supply roll located in line with the first printing and-first heating and cooling units and below the first heatingand cooling unit, and means for leading the web through the first and second units and delivering the web at the oppo-- site end or the press in line with the second D intingand second heating'and cooling units.
*"5.'In a web perfecting press first and second multicolor printing units located side by means for leading the web through the first and second units and delivering the web.
6. In a web perfecting rotary press, first and second multicolor printing units located side by side at one end of the press, first and second 10 combined heating and cooling units located side by side above their respective printing units, a web supply roll located inline with the first printing and first heating and cooling units, and' means for leading the web through the first and it second units and deliveringthe webat the opposite end of the press in line with thesecond printing and second heating and cooling units.
'1. In a web perfecting rotary press, first and second multicolor printing units located side. by 20 side at one end oi! the press, first'and second combined heating and cooling units located side by side above their respective printing units, turning bars located below their respective heating and cooling units, a web supply. roll located in 25 line with the first printing and first heating and cooling units, and means for leading' the web through the first units, around the turning bars. through the second units, and delivering the web.
8. In a web perfecting. rotary press, first and second multicolor printing units located side by side at one end oi. the. press, first and second combinedheating and cooling units located side, by side above their respective printing units, turning bars located below their respecti e heating and cooling units, a web supply roll 1' ated in line with the first printing and am heating and. cooling units, and means for leading the web through the first units, around the turning bars, I tnrtugn the second units, and delivering the web at the opposite endot the pressing-line with the second printing and second heating and. cooling units.
