This invention relates to printing machines,
and more particularly to multicolor web printing machines. 1
Heretofore various arrangements of printing units and cooperating components have been provided to produce multicolor products. Some of these arrangements incorporate a common impression cylinder, about which a number of plate or form cylinders are disposed, and, in others, a
plurality of superposed color printing units are provided, and they are arranged so that various web runs are possible. Various other. arrangements are also provided, but in each instance, the operating and web run flexibility is'somewhat limited. More recently,- standard perfecting newspaper units with additional form cylinders have been employed to produce multicolor printing, but although such arrangements have proved relatively satisfactory, they too lack the operating and web run flexibility now commercially demanded.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a line of printing units to produce multicolor products, the units being constructed and arranged to afiord the maximum operating and web run flexibility.
Another object of this invention is to provide a printing machine incorporating a folder and a plurality of units in line, certain of the units being standard perfecting units, and others being standard perfecting units provided with additional color printing cylinders, the arrangement being such as to afford maximum operating and web run flexibility. v
It is also an object of this invention to provide a multicolor web printing machine of generally improved construction and arrangement, Whereby the device will be simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, practical, serviceable and efficient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangements of'parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
For a complete disclosure of the invention, a detailed description thereof will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification, wherein:

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, there is depicted an improved printing machine construction and arrangement which includes a plurality of standard perfectingprinting units, a plurality of three-impression printing units and a folder arranged in line. In the present illustration, 7 units are provided, and the first unit A is a perfecting newspaper printing unit comprising two printing couples and I2, and the couple ll includes an impression cylinder l3 and a form or plate cylinder l5, and the couple i2 includes an impression cylinder I3 and cooperating form cylinder l5. The second unit B is a special three-impression unit, and includes two printing couples I6 and H of standard construction. The printing couple l6 includes the usual impression cylinder I3 and plate or form cylinder l5, and the couple ll includes the conventional impression cylinder I3 and cooperating form cylinder 15. The printing couple i6 is also provided with an additional plate or form cylinder I8 which runs in cooperable engagement with the impression cylinder l3 to provide a printing triple.
The printing unit A incorporates the conventional inking mechanism for the plate or form cylinders, and also a suitable drive mechanism.
The drive mechanism is, however, so constructed and arranged that the impression cylinder I3 and form cylinder l of the printing couple |2 are reversibly driven. Inasmuch as the inking.
Patent No. 2,102,631, therefore, the drive mechanism for the units disclosed in this application has not been illustrated.
The three-impression printing unit B is similar to the perfecting unit A exceptthe provisionof the additional plate or form cylinder |8 and the conventional inking mechanism, not shown, for this cylinder. The three-impression unit 13 is constructed and arranged so that the form cylinders I5 and I8 and the cooperating impression cylinder l3 are driven for reversible operation.
The third printing unit C is similar to the standard perfecting unit A, and it includes two printing couples 2|] and 2|, and the printing couples include impression cylinder |3|3 and form cylinder |5|5. The impression cylinder l3 and form cylinder |5 of the printing couple 2| are reversibly driven.
The fourth unit D is located in line adjacent the unit C, and this unit is a special three-impression unit similar to the unit B, and includes printing couples 22 and 23, and an additional form or plate cylinder 25 which runs in cooperable relation with the impression cylinder l3 of the printing couple 22. In this unit the form cylinders l5 and 25 and cooperating impression cylinder l3 are reversibly driven.
A former folder 26 of the conventional construction is positioned in the line adjacent the unit D, and webs are led from the units of this line to the folder through suitable guide instrumentalities to be hereinafter described.
A perfecting printing unit E provides the fifth unit, and it is located in the line adjacent the folder 26. This unit includes two printing couples 2! and 28, and the printing couple 28 is driven for reversible operation.
A three-impression perfecting printing unit F is located in the line adjacent the standard unit E and this unit provides the sixth printing unit of the line. It includes two printing cou les 3') and 3|, and each couple, in conformity with the arrangement of the other printing units. includes an impression cylinder |3 or |3 and a form cylinder IE or I5 A separate form or plate cylinder 32 cooperably engages the impression cylinder |3 of the printing couple 30. In this unit the form cylinders 32 and Sand the coo erating impression cylinder |3 are reversibly driven, in the manner hereinbeiore disclosed.
The seventh unit G is next positioned in the line adjacent the unit F, and this unit includes two printing couples 36 and 31 having impression cylinders ill-l3 and form cylinders |5-|5. An additional form or plate cylinder 38 runs in cooperable engagement with the impression cylinder l3 of the printing couple 31. In this unit the impression cylinder l3 and form cylinder l5 of the printing couple 36 are reversibly driven.
Each plate or form cylinder may be supplied by the usual inking mechanism, hereinbefore referred to, with black ink or ink of any preferred color, and it is to be understood, of course, that the ink supplied to each form cylinder may be changed to meet color requirements.
In the arrangement depicted in Figure 1, the outermost web W that is, the upper or top web which passes over the; drag roller 40 in its run to the. former of the folder 2B, is directed by guide rollers 4| through the printing couples 2! and 28 of the fifth unit E, where a black impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web W and a color impression is printed on the second or reverse side of this web. The web W is then guided by rollers 42 through the threeimpression unit F, where two colors and a black impression are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, so that the web now has one impression on its first or obverse and four impressions on its second or reverse side, as indicated in the diagrammatic Figure 2. The web W is led from the special unit F over guide rollers 43 to the drag roller 40, where it is slit and then led down over the formers of the folder 26, in conformity with the usual practice.
The second outermost web W that is, the second web from the top which passes down over the drag roller 40 in its run to the formers, is led around rollers 45 through the three-impression unit G, where 'a color impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web, and two color impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, as indicated in the diagrammatic Figure 2. After passing through .the special printing unit G, the web W is led around guide rollers 46 and over the drag roller 40, where it is slit into narrower webs or ribbons, and the ribbons are then directed down over the formers of, the folder 26, in conformity with the usual practice.
The next outermost web W is led around guide rollers 41 through the three-impression printing unit B, where a color impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web, and then two color impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web. This web is then led around guide rollers 48 through the perfecting printing unit A, where two additionalcolor impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, so that the web now has four colors imprinted on one side and one color on the other, as indicated in Figure 2. After web W passes through the unit A, it is led around guide rollers 50 to the drag roller 40, and then to the folder, in conformity with the usual practice.
The innermost web W is led around guide rollers 5| through th perfecting printing unit C, where a black impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web, and a color impression is printed on the second or reverse side of the web. Web W is then guided from the unit C around guide rollers 52 through the three-impression printing unit D, where two colors and a black impression are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, so that this web now has one impression on one side and four impressions on the other, as indicated in Figure 2. After the web W passes through the special unit D, it is led around guide rollers 53 to the drag roller 40, where it is slit and finally led down the formers of the folder 26, in conformity with the usual practice.
From the foregoing, it is observed that in the web runs disclosed in Figure 1, the outermost web W has one impression printed on one side and four on the other; the next outermost web W has one impression printed on one side and two on the other; and the third web W has four impressions imprinted on one side and one on the other; while the last or innermost web W has one impression printed on one side and four impressions on the other. In the arrangement depicted in the drawings of this application, turner bars 55, of the conventional construction, are provided, and whenthese turner bars are employed, the webs may be slit and led from one side of the press to the other,
so that different combinations of webs may be run down the formers of the folder, but inasmuch as this phase of the disclosure forms no part of the invention apart from the arrangement disclosed, it has not been further illustrated.
In the arrangement'disclosed in Figure 3. the first or outermost web W is first led through the three-impression ,unit F, where one impression is printed on the first or obverse side and two impressions are printed on the second or reverse side. This web is then led through theperfecting printing unit E, where two additional impressions are printed on the second or reverse side, so that the web now has four impressions imprinted on one side 'and' one on the other, as indicated in the diagrammatic Figure 4. After printing, this web is led over the drag roller 40 and down the formers of the folder 26, in conformity with the usual practice.
The second outer web W is led through the three-impression printing unit G, where one imanother impression is printed on the second orreverse side of the web. This web is then led through the three-impression printing unit 13, where three additional impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, so that the web now has one impression printed on one.

The fourth' or innermost web W is first led through the three-impression printing unit D,

This web is then led through the perfecting unit C, where two additional impressions are printed on its second or reverse side, so that the web now has one impression printed on one side and four impressions printed on the other, as shown in the diagrammatic Figure 4. The printed web W is then led over the drag roller 40 and down the formers of the folder 26 with the other printed Webs.
In comparing'the results produced by the arrangement shown in Figure 3 with the results produced by the arrangement depicted in Figure 1, it will be seen that the impressions printed on the faces of the web W have been reversed. The side or face of the web which in one arrangement had one impression, has four in the other arrangement, and the surface on which four impressions were made in one arrangement, has one in the other arrangement. This is also true of the webs W and W. The impressions printed onthe opposed faces of the web W? are the same in both arrangements.
In the arrangement depicted in Figure 5, the
, first or outermost web W is led through the perfecting printing unit E, where one impression is printed on the first or obverse side ofthe web and another impression is printed on its second or reverse side, as indicated in diagrammatic Figure 6. The printed web W is then led over the drag roller 40 and down the formers of the folder 26.
The second or outermost web W is first led through the three-impression printing unit-F, where two impressions are printed on the first or obverse side of the web, and a single impression is printed on the second or reverse side of the web. This web is then led through the threeimpression printing unit G, where three additional'impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, so that the web'now has four impressions on one side and two on' the other, as indicated in diagrammatic Figure 6. The printed web W is then led over the dra roller 40 and down the formers of the folder, in conformity with the usual practice.
The third outermost web W is first led through the perfecting printing unit C, where one impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web and another impression is printed on a second or reverse side of the-web. This web is then led around the impression cylinder l3 of the unit B, where two additional impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the-web, so that theweb now has three impressions printed on one side and one on the other, as indicated in the diagrammatic Figure 6. The printed web W is then led over the drag roller '40 and finally down the formers of the folder. The fourth or innermost web W is led through the three-impression printing unit D, where'one impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web and two impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, as indicated in the diagrammatic Figure 6. The printed web W is then led over the drag roller 40 and down the formers of the folder in the usual manner.
In reviewing the results products by the arrangement depicted in Figure 5, it will be observed that the first or outermost web W has a single impression printed on one side and a single impression printed on the other; the second outermost web W has two impressions on one surface and four impressions on the other; the third outermost web W has three impressions printed on one side thereof and one impression printed on the other; and the fourth or innermost web W has two impressions printed on one side and one impression on the other.
In the arrangement depicted in Figure 7, the
first or outermost web W is led through the perfecting printing unit E, where one impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web and another impression is printed on its second or reverse side, as indicated in the diagrammatic Figure 8. The printed web W is then led over the drag roller 40 and down the formers of the folder. The second outermost web W is first led through the three-impression printing unit G, where two impressions are printed on the first or obverse side of the web and a single impression is printed on its second or reverse side. This web is then led around the impression cylinder l3 of the unit F, where two additional impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, so that the web now hastwo impressions printed on one side and three on the other, as indicated in diagrammatic Figure 8. The printed web W is then led over the drag roller 40 and down the formers of the folder 26.
The third outermost web W is first led through the three-impression printing unit B, where one impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web and two impressions are printed on its second or reverse side. This web is then led around the impression cylinder I! of the printing unit C, where an additional impression is printed on the first or observe side ofthe web, so that the web now has two impressions printed on one surface and two impressions printed on theother, as indicated in diagrammatic Figure 8. The urth orinnermost web W is led through the three-impression printing unit D, where one folder.
colors remaining on the form cylinders, or different color combinations may be easily pro-' duced by employing the same web runs and utilizing difierent colors on selected form cylinders.
The arrangement preferably provides for an old number of units and a folder in a line, with certain of the units being located at one side of the folder and others at the opposite side. The
units at one side of the folder are so arranged that a standard perfecting unit is positioned immediately adjacent the folder and a three-impression unit is positioned imediately adjacent the standard unit at a location away from the On the opposed side of the folder, the units are reversed, so that a three-impression unit is positioned immediately adjacent the folder, and then a standardperfecting unit is posiimpression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web and two impressions are printed on the second or reverse side, as indicated in diagrammatic Figure 8. The printed webs W and W are finally led over the drag roller 40 and down the formers of the folder 26, in conformity with the usual practice.
In the arrangement depicted in Figure 9, the outermost web W is first led around the impression cylinder l3a.-'. of the three-impression printing unit F, where one impression is printed on the first or obverse side of the web. This web is then led through the three-impression printing unitl G, where three additional impressions are printed on the first or obverse side of the web. The web W is then led around'the impression cylinder l3 of the unit F, where two impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web. From this point web W is led through the perfecting printing unit E, where two additional impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, so that the web now has four impressions printed on one side and four on the other, as indicated in diagrammatic Figure 10. The printed web W is finally led over the drag rollerlll and down the formers of the folder 26. The second or innermost web W is first led around the impression cylinder I3 of the unit B, where two colors are printed on the first or obverse side of the web,
' and this web is then led through the perfecting printing unit A, where two additional impressions are printed on the same side thereof. From this point the web W is led around the impression cylinder l3 of the perfecting unit C, where an impression is printed on its second or reverse side, and then this web is led through the threeimpression printing unit D, where three additional impressions are printed on the second or reverse side of the web, so that the web now has four impressions printed on one side and 'four impressions printed on the other, as indi eated in diagrammatic Figure 10. The printed web W is finally led over the drag roller 40 and down the formers of the folder 26, in conformity with the usual practice.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the arrangement disclosed in this invention provides maximum flexibility, in that any selected web may be run through any selected printing couple or prnting unit, or any combination thereof, and
then the printed web may be run directly to the tioned adjacent the three-impression unit but at a location removed from the folder. At this side of the former this arrangement is preferably repeated so that the units are arranged in pairs and each pair including a three-impression printing unit and a standard perfecting printing unit.
Inasmuch as this arrangement incorporates standard units and slightly altered standard units arranged in pairs with a folder in line, a great saving in initial cost is effected, and, furthermore, since standard units are employed, the obsolescence cost is greatly reduced because of the greater resale and trade-in value of these units. The utility of the press line is greatly increased, because the arrangement may be employed for regular black press or newspaper production. The arrangement is such that less time is required to thread the webs, and, consequently, less efiort on the part of the operators is required. The units are capable of running at a high speed, and since they are all located on a common floor level, the entire line of units is relatively easy to operate and maintain, and all adjustments both preparatory and operational, are made from the same floor level. The arrangement is such that each completely printed web is led directly from the final printing cylinders to the folder, thus eliminating long and complicated web runs.
It will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and it will be further understood that each and every novel features andcombination present in or possessed by the mechanism herein disclosed forms a partof the invention included in this application.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is:
1. I a, printing machine having a folder and perfecting printing units arranged in line on one floor level, a first printing unit adjacent the folder and having two form cylinders and two impression cylinders arranged -as a standard perfecting printing unit and adapted to print one color on each side of a web, a second printing unit positioned beyond the first unit with relation to the folder and having two form cylinders and two impression cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit, an additional form cylinder on the second printing unit arranged in cooperable relation to one of the impression cylinders, and means for reversing the direction of rotation of one of the printing couples or triples of each unit, whereby a web may be led through both units to first print one color on one side and subsequently print four colors on the other side,
impression and two form cylinders arranged as a. standard perfecting printing unit, and a threeimpression unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder.

In a printing machine, a number of pairs of printing units and a folder arranged in line on one floor level, the folder and units being so disposed that at least one pair of units is located in the line at each side of the folder, each pair of units comprising aperfecting unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit, and a threeimpression unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relationwith one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, and means for reversibly driving certain cylinders of each unit.
4. In a printing machine, a number of pairs of printing units and a folder arranged in line on one floor level, the folder and units being so disposed that at least one pair of units is located in the line at each side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a three-impression unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard D lfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, the units at one side of the folder being so disposed that the perfecting unit of each pair is located adjacent the folder and the three-impression unit away from the folder, and at the opposed side of the folder the units of each pair of units are so disposed that the three-impression unit is located adjacent the folder and the perfecting unit away from the folder.
5. In a printing machine, a number of pairs of printing units and a folder arranged in line on one floor level, the folder and units being so disposed that at least one pair of units is located in the line at each side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having .two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a threeimpression unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, the units at one side of'the folder being so disposed that the perfecting unit of each pair is located adjacent the. folder and the three-impression unit away from the folder, and at the opposed side of the folder th units of each pair of units are so disposed that the three-impression unit is located adjacent the folder and the perfecting unit away from the folder, and means for reversibly driving certain cylinders of each unit.
6. In a printing machine, a number of pairs of printing units, a single unit and a folder arranged in line on one floor level, the folder and units being so disposed that at least one pair of units is located in the line at one side of the folder and a pair of units and a single unit cated in the line at the opposed side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a three-impression unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and an addit onal form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder.
7. In a printing machine, a number of pairs of printing units, a single unit and a folder arranged inline on one floor level, the folder and units being so disposed that at least one pair of units is located in the line at one side of the folder and a pair of units and a single unit located in the line at the opposed side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a three-impression unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, and means for reversibly driving certain cylinders of each unit.
8. In a printing machine, a number of pairs of printing units and a folder arranged in line on one floor level, the folder and units being so disposed that at least one pair of units is located in the line at one side of the folder and a plurality of pairs of units are located in the line at the opposed side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a threeimpres'sion unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as .a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder.
9. In a printing machine, a number of pairs of printing units and a folder arranged in line on one floor level, the folder and units being so tioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, and means a for reversibly driving certain cylinders of each unit.
10. In a printing machine, a number of pairs of printing units and a folder arranged in line on one floor level, the folder andunits being so disposed that at least one pair of units is located in the line at one side of the folder and a plurality of pairs of units are.- located in the line at the opposed side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a three-impression unit having two impression cylinders and two form cylinders arranged'as a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, the
units in the line at one side of the folder being so disposed that the perfecting unit of each pair is located adjacent the folder and the three-impression unit away from the folder, and at the opposite side of the folder the units of each pair of units are so disposed that the three-impression unit is located adjacent the folder and the perfecting unitaway from the folder.

Ina printing'machine, a number of pairs of printing units, a single unit and a. folder arof units are so disposed that the three-impresranged in line on one floor level, the folder and unit being so disposed that at least one pair of units and a single unit are located in the line at one side of the folder and a plurality of pairs of units are located in the line at the opposite side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a three-impression unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation to one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, the units at one side of the folder being so disposed that the perfecting unit of each pair is located adjacent the folder and the three-impression unit away from the folder, and at the opposite side of the folder the units of each pair of units are so disposed that the three-impression unit is located adjacent the folder and the perfecting unit away from the folder, and means for reversibly driving certain cylinders of each unit.
15. In a printing machine, seven printing units and a folder in line on one floor level, the units being so arranged that at least one pair of units is located in the line at each side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a three-impression unit having two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, the units in the line at one side of the folder being so disposed that the perfecting unit of each pair is located adjacent the folder and the threeimpnession unit away from the folder, and at the opposite side of the folder the units of each pair -of units are so disposed that the three-impres- 16. In a printing machine, seven printing units and a folder in line on one floor level, the units being so arranged that at least one pair of units is located in the line at each side of the folder, each pair of units comprising a perfecting unit having two impression and two form -cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and a three-impression unit having'two impression and two form cylinders arranged as a standard perfecting printing unit and an additional form cylinder positioned in cooperable relation with one of the impression cylinders so that two of the form cylinders of each three-impression unit operably engages a single impression cylinder, the units in the line at one side of the folder being so disposed that the perfecting unit of each pair is located adjacent the folder and the threeimpression unit away from the folder, and at the opposite side of the folder each pair of units are so disposed that the units of the three-impression unit is located adjacent the folder and th perfecting unit away from the folder, and means'for reversibly driving certain cylinders of each unit.
