JOHN J. HALLIWELL, 0F TUGKAHOE, NEW YORK, ASSIGN OR TO B. HOE & C0,, ING, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK. I
LATE-NEWS AND COLOR-PRINTING .MECHANISM.
Application filed. October 22, 1926. Serial No. 143,319.
This invention relates to certain improvements in printing mechanisms for printing late news and color.
These late news printing mechanisms are employed for printing .additional matter, such as late news received in the newspaper office after the make-up of the forms by which the main portion of the paper is printed. In these late news mechanisms, a portion of the stereotype plate or plates which print the main paper is left blank, that is, it is not provided with a printing surface, so that a certain area of the web is left unprinted after the main portion has been printed or perfected. In the operation of these late news devices, it is desirable that the construction be such that a printing impression may be effected at every revolution of the late news cylinder or at alternate revolutions, depending on the place in the main web where the late news printing is to be done, or on. whether the late news printing is to be on a collected product or an uncollected product. It is, furthermore, desirable in these latenews devices that late news incolor or other color printing may be effected in suitable spaces left in the main web, and this either on collected or uncollected products. 1
It is the especial object of the invention to produce a construction by which late news and color may be printed either on a collected or uncollected product by the employment of an impression mechanism whichis commonto both the late news and the color printing devices.
A further object of the invention is to produce a mechanism for effecting this sort of printing in which the web is guided through the mechanism in such a manner that smutting of the web is prevented, and in which the parts are arranged so as to be easy of access.
With these and other objects not particularly referred to in View, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic end view of an arrangement embodying the invention for printing'on a collected product or for printing on alternate revolutions of the late cylinders.
news and color cylinders, the parts being shown in nonprinting position, and
Figure 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the parts in printing relation, the view also showing in dotted lines thearrangement of the plate and blankets when printing on an uncollected product, that is, on every revolution of the late news cylinder.
Referring now to these drawings, the various parts of the mechanism are supported in suitable'framing 1, 2, diagrammatically indicated. Printing mechanisms embodying the invention will include a late news print er in the form of a cylinder 3, which is inked from suit-able inking mechanism, indicated generally by the numeral 4:. The printing mechanism will also include a color printing mechanism shown as a cylinder 5, which is inked from a suitable color inking mechanism, indicated generally by the numeral 6. The color cylinder 5 is, in the particular con: struction shown, capacitated to carry two plates around, one of these plates P being shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the other-of these plates being indicated at P in dotted lines in Fig. 2. 1 g V The printing surface of the late news printer which will print in black may be formedon the surface of the cylinder or may be a small stereotype plate.
The late news cylinder 3 and the color cylinder 5, in constructions embodying the invention, will cooperate with an impression mechanism, shown in the form of a cylinder 7, this cylinder 7 being located between the cylinder 3 and the cylinder 5, so that it is in printing relation with both these printing This impression cylinder is a blanketed cylinder, the cylinder being provided with removable blankets, one of these blankets being indicated at B in Figs. 1 and 2, and the other of the blankets being indicated at B in Fig. 2. It will be observed that the color cylinder 5 and the impression cylinder 7 are of the same diameter, but that the impression cylinder 7 is twice the diameter of the late news printing cylinder 3. Furthermore, it will be observed that by the removal of a plate from the cylinder 5 there is formed a non-impression surface 8, and by the removal of one of the blankets, as the blanket B, from the impression cylinder 7 there is formed a nonimpression surface 9. With this construction, therefore, referring described in its preferred form it will be and the color printer will make an impresfirst to Fig. 1, the color and the late news will both be printed against the blanket B on a halt revolution of the cylinders 5 and 7. On the next half revolution of thesetwo cyl-H .inders, the non-impression surface 9 will pre-V vent printing by the late news printer 3, and
the absence of aplate, as plateP, from the] color cylinder 8 will result in no color printing. \Vhen, however, the plate P: is put on the cylinder 5 and a second blanket, as B,
is put on the cylinder 7 the cylinder?) will print on each revolutiomjl first against the lanket B and then against the blanket B,
sion for each half revolution of the cylinder 5. Thus the inechanism 'may be used for a printing either on a collected or an uncollected product without necessitating the tripping of any ofthe'cylinders, a very simple 7 and convenient mechanism being thus prowhen the cylinder is only half blanketed,
In'machines embodying-the invention 1ts best form, web guides areprovided so that the web is'held in contact Withthe imression cylinder-at all times either when oth the blankets are on the cylinder or this arrangement having been found in practice to prevent nndesirablesmutting of the rangement illustrated.
' Web. These guides, of course, may be of any suitable character, but are shown in the 1 form of rolls 10, 11 and 12, these rolls being so arranged that'the web V is heldin contact with the impression cylinder, It will be understood, of course, that the web W is or may be a previously printed Web, printed in a mechanism notillustrated, spaces being left so that the color and late news may be printed on the desired page of the paper.
'While the invention has been shown and understood that various changes may be made in the specific constructlon and. ar-
rangement of the parts, and vthey may be.
