A tensioning device for a flexible plate on a saddle of a rotary printing cylinder comprises a tensioning strip mounted on supports along the longitudinal edge of the saddle, the supports being movable towards and away from the saddle under the operation of screw-controlled wedge-shaped sliding pieces contained in the saddle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 4 an enlarged fragment of the apparatus wherein a printing cylinder 2 supports a saddle 1 for tensioning thin plates 4; the plates 4 have holes 5 in their ends engaging teeth 6 carried on a tensioning strip 7, the strip being mounted on support arms 8 sliding in slots 9 formed in the saddle, the slots being of such a dimension as to allow for some lateral movement, i.e. parallel to the longitudinal edge 10 of the saddle. Further grooves 11 formed in the saddle contain wedgeshaped sliding pieces 12, the oblique faces 13 of which co-act with oblique faces on the ends of the support arms 8; thus movement laterally of the sliding pieces 12 causes perpendicular movement of the support arms, and hence of the tensioning strip 7. The sliding pieces, four to each saddle, are under the control of screws 14, each of which can be operated independently, if required to slew the plate. An alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) has each pair of sliding pieces movable simultaneously under the action of a single screw (16), guided in a slide (17) which can be displaced in a longitudinal direction when it is required to slew, or laterally shift, the plate.
