1,180,042. Clamping printing plates. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG - NURNBERG A.G. 16 Aug., 1967 [1 Oct., 1966], No. 37772/67. Heading B6C. A device for clamping flexible printing plates to a rotary printing cylinder comprises a rotatable shaft disposed in a longitudinal well in the cylinder periphery, a plate clamping element coacting with the shaft and an adjusting strip between the shaft and one side of the well for displacing the shaft between positions parallel and inclined to the cylinder axis. In Fig. 1, a flexible printing plate 1 is mounted on printing cylinder 2 with its ends 4, 6 being clamped between a rotatable shaft 3 and at least one clamping flange 7, end 4 being inserted in a radial slot 5 in shaft 3, and the whole clamping device being mounted in well 9. Each clamping flange 7 is generally in the form of a two-armed lever pivoting about an abutment 12 on one side of well 9, and the entire plate 1 can be moved longitudinally under the action of an adjusting screw (14), (Fig. 4, not shown), acting on the flaps. Plates are tensioned by rotating shaft 3 under the action of worm gear (not shown), and fine adjustment of tension can be obtained by the action of adjusting screw (16), (Fig. 2, not shown), which moves adjusting strip 11 upwards or downwards as viewed in Fig. 1, and thus rotates shaft 3. Strip 11 and hence shaft 3 can also be adjusted obliquely under the action of a further adjusting screw (21), so that shaft 3 becomes inclined to the cylinder axis. An alternative embodiment (Figs. 3, 5, not shown) provides for adjusting tension by means of rack and pinion (26), (25), and adjusting screw (24) acting on a movable abutment 12 for flaps 7, and for oblique movement of strip 11 and shaft 3 through an eccentric carried on a shaft (28).
