Abstract

Document handling apparatus including a feed device adapted to be positioned adjacent to the leading edge of a stack of documents, said feed device including a first, fixed friction element provided with a front portion adapted to be positioned at a position adjacent to the leading edge of said document stack, a second movable friction element located below said first friction element and adapted to grip a document and move it between said first and second friction elements, a document retention surface which it has a lower portion adjacent to said front portion of said first friction element and extending in a plane generally perpendicular to said second friction element, and a force applying element perpendicular to the pile located above said second friction element, having said document retention surface to and said front portion of said first friction element a width adapted to be less than the width of said documents and said force applying element perpendicular to the stack having a C-shaped configuration with a width greater than that of said document retention surface and being arranged such that the free ends of said C-shape extend beyond said document retention surface to partially surround said front portion of said first friction element.
