Abstract

A composition for treating textile materials, comprises a potassium alkyl phosphate of which the alkyl radicals contain 6-10 carbon atoms dispersed in an inert, substantially neutral, non-volatile, organic liquid which comprises a mineral oil or a mono ester, or both. The composition may be applied to the textile materials in undiluted form or as an emulsion in water. The invert non-volatile liquid should not boil at a temperature below 100 DEG C. The monoester preferably contains at least 12 carbon atoms per molecule, such as butyl stearate. The composition may also comprise lubricity additives, e.g. dioleyl citrate, pentaerthritol di-, tri- or tetra-oleate, oxidized arachis oil, vegetable oils such as palm kernel oil, and naturally occurring or synthetic glycerides, a blending agent, e.g. a mixture of compounds having the formulae <FORM:1101360/C4-C5/1> and <FORM:1101360/C4-C5/2> in which the groups R are aliphatic hydrocarbon carbon radicals having on average 6-18 carbon atoms, the groups R1 are -(CH2-CH2)-, <FORM:1101360/C4-C5/3> and n is an integer having an average value of 1-4, or polyethylene glycol derivatives of alcohols having 8-18 carbon atoms per molecule of alcohol and prepared by reacting 2-5 moles of ethylene oxide to 1 mole of alcohol, alkyl phenols, and small proportions of other potassium alkyl phosphates. The composition may contain 5-25% by weight of the potassium alkyl phosphate, 5-25% by weight of the blending agent and 50-90% by weight of the organic liquid.ALSO:Potassium alkyl phosphates of which the alkyl radicals contain an average content of 6-10 carbon atoms, which are used in the treatment of textiles, are prepared by reacting an excess of phosphorus pentoxide with an alcohol or mixture of alcohols containing 6-10 carbon atoms, subsequently reacting the excess phosphorus pentoxide with a higher alcohol, e.g. oleyl alcohol, or a glycerol fatty acid monoester or glycol fatty ether or ester containing a hydroxyl group, and neutralizing the product with potassium hydroxide.ALSO:Textile materials, e.g. regenerated cellulose, cellulose triacetate, polyamide, polyester, polyolefin and polyacrylonitrile fibres, are rendered antistatic by treating them with a textile processing agent comprising a potassium alkyl phosphate of which the alkyl radicals contains 6-10 carbon atoms dispersed in an inert, substantially neutral, non-volatile, organic liquid, which comprises a mineral oil or a mono ester, or both. The processing agent may be applied to the textile materials in undiluted form or as an emulsion in water. The inert non-volatile liquid should not boil at a temperature below 100 DEG C. The monoester preferably contains at least 12 carbon atoms per molecule, such as butyl stearate. The treating composition may also comprise lubricity additives, e.g. dioleyl citrate, pentaerythritol, di-, tri-, or tetra-oleate, oxidised arachis oil, vegetable oils such as palm kernel oil, and naturally occurring or synthetic glycerides, a blending agent, e.g. a mixture of compounds having the formul <FORM:1101360/D1-D2/1> and <FORM:1101360/D1-D2/2> in which the groups R are aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals having on average 6-18 carbon atoms, the groups R1 are -(CH2-CH2)-, <FORM:1101360/D1-D2/3> , <FORM:1101360/D1-D2/4> or <FORM:1101360/D1-D2/5> and n is an integer having an average value of 1-4, or polyethylene glycol derivatives of alcohols having 8-18 carbon atoms per molecule of alcohol and prepared by reacting 2-5 moles of ethylene oxide to 1 mole of alcohol, alkyl phenols, and small proportions of other potassium alkyl phosphates. The processing agent may contain 5-25% by weight of the potassium alkyl phosphate, 5-25% by weight of the blending agent and 50-90% by weight of the organic liquid.
