Abstract

1,080,898. Control systems for discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 27, 1966 [Jan. 30, 1965], No. 3717/66. Heading H2H. A system for starting and supplying a gas or vapour discharge tube 4 comprises a silicon controlled rectifier 6 connected in parallel with the tube 4, the rectifier 6 and a capacitor 3 being arranged to form a voltage doubling circuit whereby to produce a high voltage for igniting the tube 6. An impedance 5 provides the ballast for the tube 6 and is furnished with a winding 16 which after the tube is ignited, provides a voltage which is rectified by a diode 17 and applied to a resistor 14 in opposition to the normal triggering voltage for the rectifier 6 obtained from a tapping 15 on a filament heating transformer 11 so as to render the rectifier 6 non-conducting after the tube 6 has been ignited.
