Abstract

1,039,681. Discharge apparatus. G. BAUKNECHT G.m.b.H. ELEKTROTECHNISCHE FABRIKEN. Feb. 8, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962], No. 5313/63. Heading H1X. [Also in Division H5] Negative oxygen ions for air conditioning are extracted by a D.C. field 7 from a discharge device in which A.C. glow or corona discharges are produced at the edges of thin electrodes 3 of difficultly atomizable metal mounted on one face of an insulating body 1 having one or more laminar counter-electrodes 2 on the opposite face, the electrode(s) 2 and the supply lead thereto being screened by the electrodes 3a and a metal screen 13 connected to the electrodes 3 and maintained at a negative D.C. potential in relation to earth by a resistor 16 of at least 10‹ ohms. Nitrogen oxides are substantially suppressed and ozone formation either suppressed or controlled. In the arrangement shown the A.C. supplying the electrodes is rectified to provide the D.C. field. The discharge intensity, and consequently the rate of ozone production, is controlled by a potentiometer 8, while the D.C. field, and consequently the rate of negative ion extraction is controlled by a potentiometer 9. The device is surrounded by an additional earthed screen 15. A number of the devices may be suspended from a semiconductive ceiling or false ceiling of a room or stood upon the floor or upon tables or other supports or mounted in the backs of seats and a D.C. source connected between the devices and the ceiling. Alternatively an insulated ceiling electrode may be provided and the D.C. field varied slowly and continuously in a cyclic manner to effect distribution of the ions at head level. In modified arrangements, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the A.C. and D.C. are variable in steps by respective tapped switches 17 and 18. The rate of ion production may be indicated by an electrostatic voltmeter 19 (Fig. 3) or by a glow discharge tube 28 (Fig. 4). The insulating body 1 may be in the form of a tube closed at one end (Fig. 4) or a cylinder, Fig. 5 (not shown). In the latter case metal foil strips 31 for collecting dust may be mounted between the discharge electrodes 3 which are helically wound wires of about 0À1 mm. diameter.
