Abstract

In an electron optical device having >=2 spaced electrodes in which a semiconductor material forms at least part of a connection between the electrodes, the resistance of the connection per unit length of the device is varied in such a way that the electric current passing through the semiconductor material results in a pre-determined potential distribution between the electrodes.
