Abstract
1,227,607. Discharge apparatus. C. GRAF VON BERCKHEIM. 2 Oct., 1968 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 46755/68. Heading H1X. Apparatus for producing unipolar atmospheric ions comprises a plurality of elongated air ducts 1 arranged side-by-side, a single electrode 6 in each duct in the form of a metal spike which is insulated from that duct and connected to one pole of a high voltage D.C. source 11, and duct parts forming a counter electrode to attract and remove from an air stream in each duct ions of one polarity produced at the single electrode in that duct. A stainless steel rod 6 with a spike 7 having a diameter of less than 0À1 mm. is insulated by a bushing 8 from the earthed wall of a duct 1 provided with a grid 9 and is connected to a D.C. supply 11 of a value such that the ionization field strength is just reached or is only slightly exceeded so that the production of ozone and nitric oxides is kept to a minimum. Air blown by a fan 2 is ionized at the spike 7 for form positive ions which are collected by the duct 1 and grid 9, and negative ions which pass between positively charged electrodes 10 to an enclosed space, e.g. a motor vehicle. The ion concentration can be regulated by varying the speed of the fan motor 3 or by varying the voltage applied to the electrodes 10. Positive ions are obtained by reversing the polarity of the spike 7 and ducts 1.
