A clamping device for an extensometer comprises a fixed jaw 16, a movable jaw 18 and a guide rod 23 which is screwed into a bore 20 of the fixed jaw 16 and extends slidably through a bore 24 of the movable jaw 18. The guide rod 23 is surrounded by a helical spring 31 which is compressed between the end faces 30, 33 of telescoping sleeves 29, 32. In use, the outer sleeve 32 is rotated to set the required spring compression or gripping force, the gripping force being indicated on a scale 36. When used as an extensometer two such clamping devices are used.
