Abstract

966,055. Hydraulically operated article gripping devices. SAHLIN ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 25, 1963 [June 13, 1962 (2)], Nos. 22798/62 and 22799/62. Heading B8H. Jaws 22 are pivoted on a piston-rod 17 which slides within an hydraulic cylinder 12 and are closed, against the action of a spring 25, by a piston-rod 19 which slides within the piston-rod 17. Hydraulic fluid is supplied to the cylinder 12 through ports 18 and to the interior of the piston-rod 17 through a tube 15. The jaws are rotated about the longitudinal axis of the device by a pinion 16 fast with the tube 15 which is rotated by an hydraulically operated rack within a housing 13. So that the jaws are not inadvertently opened or closed due to changes in the amount of fluid inside the rod 17 when it is moved in or out, the tube 15 is connected to a drain manifold when the jaws are to be kept open and to a supply of pressurized fluid when they are to be held closed.
