Abstract

A device for use in igniting fuel by means of the spontaneous combustion of a pyrophoric substance such as aluminium borohydride brought into contact with air comprises a housing 1 in which is formed a chamber 2 having a movable wall constituted by a diaphragm 3, the chamber also having an orifice 4 closed by a valve member 5 on a stem 6 secured to the diaphragm 3 and held in closed position by a spring 9, the chamber 2 being connected to a container, holding the pyrophoric substance, via a hollow needle 11. A sudden blow on a boss 7 secured to stem 6 causes a pressure rise in the chamber 2 and the unseating of valve 5 so that a small quantity of the pyrophoric substance is ejected. In a modification the device contains its own supply of pyrophoric substance and the boss is struck by a spring operated hammer.
