Class 75(iii) [Also in Group XXIX] A gas-burning pyrophoric lighter comprises a casing, a container therein for liquefied gas fuel, pyrophoric ignition striker mechanism carried on the casing, and outlet valve means for the container comprising a deformable resilient regulator, serving for adjustment of the size of the flame from the exterior of the lighter, and also serving as the valve-member of a shut-off valve for the gas adapted to be actuated by the ignition striker mechanism. On actuating the flint wheel 2, Fig. 1, by means of a press button 5 a plunger 7 extending downwardly from the latter depresses an end of a lever 11, having an aperture 12 freely engaging the flint tube 13, to raise the opposite end of the lever which lifts a flange 15 on a cut-off valve controlling the flow of gas from a fuel container 16. The valve comprises a body 43, Fig. 2, threaded into the wall 49 of the fuel container, and a member 45 biassed by a spring 46 against a resilient pad 47 to cause the latter to close the inner end of the inlet passage 48. When the lighter is operated the member 45 is raised by the lever 11, Fig. 1, or by the lever 53, Fig. 2, and allows the gas pressure to raise the periphery of the pad 47 to an extent determined by the screw-threaded adjustment of a hollow plug 44, thereby permitting a controlled gas flow through the valve. In order to avoid an accumulation of liquid (the liquefied gas) in the valve which might cause an enlarged flame on opening the valve the latter may be enclosed in and spaced from a cylindrical casing having apertures above the normal level of the liquid (liquefied gas) fuel for the passage of the fuel in the gaseous state only.
