Description

15 20 25 30 Still another approach is represented through US 3,160,344 which relies at least partly on an article placed inside of the container to prevent the end panels from falling, or through US 4,396,118 which relies on outer end panels depending from a lid to hold retracted inner end panels in upraised position inside of the outer end panels.
WO 2006/ 101443 discloses a box-shaped container formed from a single sheet of corrugated board wherein end panels are arranged retracted inside of a reinforced end zone. This container requires neither adhesive nor other measure to keep the end panels from falling once the container is closed, relying merely on interaction between the panels that constitute the closed container.
It should be noted however, that the packaging container disclosed in WO 2006 / 101443 requires a “third hand” or a special tool to aid temporarily during the erecting of the container from a planar sheet of board, and the so formed container cannot maintain its upraised position and shape unless it is instantly closed by a lid.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention aims at providing a packaging container of the above said art, which is self-supporting and stays in shape merely in result of the interaction between panels that constitute the container, thus requiring no adhesive or other locking means to maintain the container in a box-shaped structure.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a packaging container of this constitution which is readily erectable from a planar sheet of board without requiring temporary assistance from a third hand or a tool.
The objects are met in a packaging comprising at least three integrally connected panels which are jointed at longitudinal crease lines to form a bottom and adjoining sides in a rectangular container erectable from a singular sheet of board. At least one end of the container is recessed by an end panel which is arranged retracted inside of a reinforced end zone. The reinforced end zone comprises strips of side and bottom material folded back onto the bottom and side panels along a crease 10 15 20 25 30 line applied transversally in the bottom and side panels. The end panel is via a transverse bottom crease line jointed to the folded back strip of the bottom panel, the end panel in each of its sides comprising an end panel flap, respectively, the end panel flaps jointed to the end panel via crease lines co-existing with the longitudinal crease lines which adjoin the side panels to the bottom panel, the end panel flaps co-extending with the adjacent side panels inside of the container in its erected condition, Wherein a tongue associated With the end panel extends inserted between the side panel and the appertaining strip in each side of the container, respectively.
More precisely, the tongues extend freely from opposite ends of a strip of end panel material that is jointed to the end panel via a transverse top crease line that is parallel to said bottom crease line.
Through these measures the end panel is prevented from falling outward in effect of the tongues which are inserted and arrested in the gaps formed between the side panels and the appertaining folded back strips. Simultaneously, the side panels are arrested in upraised position in effect of the same engagement between each side panel and the tongues associated with the end panel.
Through these measures the end panel is further prevented from falling inward by support from the end panel flaps which extend alongside the side panels to bear against the bottom panel, inside of the container.
A rectangular box-shaped container is this way achieved which is self-supporting without requiring any additional means to maintain its erected condition, and which can be erected from a planar sheet of board or corrugated board without requiring temporary help from a third hand or a tool.
A separate lid can be provided for closing of the container. The separate lid may include a lid panel and two lid flaps adjoining the sides of the lid panel via longitudinal crease lines. In one embodiment, the lid flaps are sized for insertion of the lid flaps into the gaps that are formed between the side panels and the respective adjoining folded back strip of side panel material. In other words, the lid flaps and the end panel tongues co-exist in these gaps in a container which is 10 15 20 25 30 closed through the separate lid. Another example of embodiment would be to have the lid flaps on the outside of the container, and secure it with for example straps, clamps, adhesive, or tape.
A lid may alternatively be integrated in the container, such as through a lid panel which is connected to one of the side panels via a longitudinal crease line. In such embodiment a lid flap may be joined to the lid panel via a longitudinal crease line.
Preferably, the lid flap will be sized for insertion into the appropriate gap that is formed between the side panel and the adjoining folded back strip of side panel material, to co-exist with the tongue that is extended from the end panel into the subject gap.
It is further to be noticed that the packaging as described is un-foldable into a planar sheet of board constituting a packaging blank in which cuts and crease lines are applied and along which the planar board sheet is foldable to provide the rectangular box or container.
More precisely, the board sheet comprises: 0 longitudinal crease lines running from end to end of the board sheet, the longitudinal crease lines defining a bottom panel between two side panels; o a first transverse crease line running between the longitudinal side edges of the board sheet, the first transverse crease line defining an end zone in the end of the board sheet; 0 in the end zone, a pair of second transverse crease lines running between the longitudinal crease lines, the second transverse crease lines defining an end panel between a bottom crease line and a top crease line; 0 in the end zone, transverse and linear cuts through the material are formed to extend the top and bottom crease lines, respectively, from the longitudinal crease lines to the longitudinal side edges of the board sheet, the cuts defining end panel flaps and end panel tongues adjoining the end panel. 10 15 20 25 30 It Will be realized that this packaging blank results in a container which requires a separate lid for closing.
It Will however also be understood that one significant advantage achieved through this embodiment is that the width of a corrugated board web can be used in its entirety, without any cut outs or loss of material.
Other embodiments of the packaging blank include one or more additional crease lines extended in the longitudinal direction of the board sheet to produce at least one lid panel adjoining an adjacent side panel, or to produce a lid panel in one side adjoining an adjacent side panel and in the opposite side adjoining a lid flap. In the embodiments comprising a lid that is formed integrally with the container, the end panel flaps may advantageously be further extended towards the longitudinal edge of the corrugated board web, this way providing a further extended co-extension with the erected side panels in the finished container.
The process of forming a box-shaped container from a packaging blank as defined hereinabove comprises a few manual steps Which can be performed Without the aid of a tool or a helping third hand: 0 forming a reinforced end zone by folding, at the first transverse crease line, strips of sides and bottom panel material back towards the side and bottom panels; 0 raising the side panels by folding at the longitudinal crease lines; 0 raising the end panel by folding at the bottom crease line; 0 locking the side panels in upraised position by insertion of the end panel tongues in the gaps formed between the side panels and the folded back strips of material adjoining the side panels; 0 supporting the end panel in upraised position by folding the end panel flaps inwards to bear against the bottom panel.
Once the side panels are locked in the erected position by engagement from the end panel tongues, the container is ready for instant use. If desired, the container can alternatively be set aside for later use, however continuously maintaining its box- shaped structure without additional securing means or measures. 10 15 20 25 SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Embodiments of the invention Will be explained below with reference made to the accompanying, schematic drawings. In the drawings, Fig. 1 illustrates the layout of cuts and creases applied to a planar sheet of board forming a packaging blank according to a first embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 shows a separate lid for a box-shaped container that is formed from the packaging blank of Figurel , and Figs. 3a-3fe illustrate in partially broken away perspective views, the sequential steps in forming a boX-shaped container from the packaging blank of Figure 1.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The packaging blank of Figure 1 is basically a rectangular sheet of board 1 having a longitudinal dimension L and a transverse or width dimension W. The board sheet 1, preferably but not limited to a sheet of corrugate board, comprises cuts and creases applied thereto in longitudinal and transverse directions. More precisely, two crease lines 2 and 3 extend in parallel in the longitudinal direction of the board sheet 1, the crease lines 2 and 3 defining a bottom panel 4 and two adjoining side panels 5 and 6 of equal or substantially equal width. The longitudinal crease lines 2 and 3 are extended to the transverse edge TE of the board sheet 1, the crease lines 2 and 3 running through an end zone defined through a transverse crease line 7. In the end zone, additional transverse crease lines form an end panel 8 defined between a bottom crease line 9 and a top crease line 10.
The bottom crease line 9 is extended transversely to each longitudinal edge LE of the board sheet 1, by cuts 11 and 12 that reach from the longitudinal crease lines 2 and 3, respectively, to the adjacent longitudinal edge of the board sheet The top crease line 10 is in similar way extended transversely to each longitudinal edge by cuts 13 and 14 that reach from the longitudinal crease lines 2 and 3, respectively, to the adjacent longitudinal edge. Between them, the cuts 11 and 13 form an end 10 15 20 25 30 panel flap 15 adjoining the end panel 8 via the extended longitudinal crease line 2.
In similar way, the cuts 12 and 14 form between them an end panel flap 16 adjoining the end panel 8 via the extended longitudinal crease line 3.
Transversally oriented strips 17, 18 of side panel material and of bottom panel material 19 are defined through, on one hand, the transverse crease line 7 and on the other hand through the bottom crease line 9 and the appurtenant cuts 1 1 and 12. The strips 17 and 18 of side panel material adjoin the bottom panel strip 19 via the longitudinal crease lines 2 and 3, forming the lower corners of the finished container.
In the very end of the packaging blank, strips of material are separated from the sheet of board 1 through the cuts 13 and 14. The strips form tongues 20, 21, each adjoining a strip of end panel material 22 via the longitudinal crease lines 2 and 3, respectively. The strip 22 on the other hand adjoins the end panel 8 via the top crease line 9, this way connecting the tongues 20, 21 operatively to the end panel 8.
In a packaging blank for a container in which both opposite ends are recessed and retracted inside a protective end zone, the ends of the packaging blank may be laid out as mirrored images of each other.
In a way explained below with reference to Figures 3a-d, the packaging blank 1 can be folded to form a box or container with an open top. A separate lid for closure of the container may be arranged as illustrated in Figure 2. The lid comprises a lid panel 23 and two lid flaps 24, 25 adjoining the sides of the lid panel via longitudinal crease lines 26 and 27. On the other hand, as illustrated in chain-dotted lines in Figure 1, a lid panel 28 can alternatively be integrally formed with the container, joined to one side panel via a longitudinal crease line 29. Additional panels 30 may be foldably connected to the lid panel. In this embodiment there is board material available to form extended end panel flaps 15' if desired, likewise indicated by chain-dotted lines in Figure 1.
The course of forming a container from the sheet of board 1 will be explained below with reference to Figures 3a to Sf, wherein arrows I to IX represent the folding steps in consecutive order. It should be noted that for reasons of clarity and 10 15 20 25 understanding the drawings of Figures 3c, 3d and 3e illustrate merely a partial completion of the container. The fully completed container is however shown in Figure 3f.
Thus with reference to Figure Sa, a first step in the process of forming the container from the sheet of board 1 comprises folding (see arrows I, II) the end panel flaps 15 and 16 at the longitudinal crease lines 2 and 3, such that the end panel flaps rest on top of each other above the end panel 8.
Next, the entire end zone is folded back towards the side and bottom panels by folding (arrow III) at the transverse crease line 7, to take the position illustrated in Figure 3b.
In the following next steps - in which the order is not important -, illustrated in Figure 3c, the tongues 20 and 21 are folded up at the crease lines 2 and 3 (arrow IV), and together with the strip 22 folded towards the end panel 8 at the top crease line 10 (arrow V), where after the side panels are erected by folding (arrow VI) at longitudinal crease lines 2 and 3.
In a finishing step shown in Figure 3d - showing one side open to improve visualization -, the end panel 8 is raised by folding (arrow VII) at bottom crease line 9 while simultaneously inserting the tongues 20, 21 in gaps 31 which are formed between the folded back side panel strips 17, 18 and the adjoining side panels 5, 6, this way arresting the side panels in the erected position by engagement from the tongues 20, 21 in the gaps 31. ln a final step, see Figure Se, the end panels are blocked from falling inward by folding the end panel flaps 15 and 16 towards the side panels (arrows VIII, IX), such that each flap 15, 16 coextends in close parallelism with the adjacent side panel, the flaps now bearing with their lower edges 32, 33 against the bottom panel 4 in the finished container.
Naturally, the invention is not limited to containers having exactly the proportions disclosed herein, but relates to the container construction principle and teachings which are recited in the appended claims.
