Description

SPECIFICATION Palletised containers This invention is concerned with improvements in and relating to palletised containers, that is contain ers having a pallet secured to the bottom surface thereof, and to pallets for use therewith.
The use of containers made of material such as cardboard, corrugated cardboard and fibreboard is, of course, verywell known; such containers being formed from one or more suitably patterned blanks of the board material, generally provided with appropriate weakening lines andlor cuts to facilitate errection oftheblankorblanks into a container. Such containers are used for the shipment and transport of a wide variety of goods and in many cases it may be desirableto provide tbe containerwith a palletfirmly attached thereto so that the container/palletassem- bly maybe readily be lifted and transported by meansrforexample, of a fork lift truck.
According to one embodiment of the invention there is provided a pallet for use in a pallet/container assembly comprising: (i) a generally rectangular container support portion having a generally flap upper surface; and (ii) at leasttwo pairs of generally parallel strip members extending inwardly from each edge of a pair of opposite sides of the pallet support portion and attached to the underside thereof, the strip members in each pair having grooves formed in opposing faces of the pairofstrip members.
The invention also provides a container/pallet assembly comprising a pallet as defined above and a container supported on the container support portion ofthe pallet and provided at opposite lower edges thereofwith at least a pair oftongues formed integrally with a part of the container and folded to engage in the spaces between the strip members of the pallet and held therein by locking members engaging in the grooves in the strip member.
Byformingthe pallet/containerassembly in this manner it is possible to form the container and pallet of different materials and it is generally preferred that the pallet be formed of a more rigid or stronger material than the container, for example of wood, so thatthe whole assembly can be used for the shipment and handling of relatively heavy articles.
Inorderthatthe invention may be well understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure lisa partial perspective view of a pallet and pallet/container assembly in accordance with the invention, the left hand portion ofthefigure showing a pallet and container before assembly and the right hand portion ofthe drawing showing the container and pallet in the assembled condition; Figure 2 is a partial elevation (on an enlarged scale) ofthe right hand portion of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section taken along line ll-ll in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a plan view of one form of a blankfor forming a container for use in a pallet/container assembly in accordance with the invention; Figure 5 is a plan view ofanother form of blankfor forming a container;; Figure 6 is a plan view of a pairofblanksforforming a container; and Figure 7 is a plan view ofanotherpairofblanksfor forming a container.
As shown in Figures 1 -3ofthedrawings(see especially Figure 1) a pallet in accordancewiththe invention comprises a pallet support portion 1 formed of planks of wood extending transversely between and secured to (for example by nailing) a pair of strip members 2 and 2a, each located on the underside ofthe palletsupport portion. A pairof additional strip members, 3 and 3a, are additionally secured to the underside of pallet support portion 1 and serve additionally to reinforce support portion 1.
Each ofthe pairs of strip members 2 and 3 and 2a and 3a have formed in opposed faces thereof (see especially the left-hand side of Figure 1 ) a pair of opposing grooves 4 and 4a, the upper edges ofwhich are spaced from the lowersurface of portion 1. In orderto raise the lower surface of support portion 1 from a surface on which it may be standing (so as to facilitate manipulation ofthe pallet for example by a fork-l ift truck), blocks of wood 5 are secured to the underside of strip members 2 and 2a at the corners of the pallet and are in turn secured to bearing members 6 and 6a each extending along the sides of and below the surface of the pallet generally parallel to strip members 2 and 2a.
A container 7 for use in combination with the pallet has integral tongues 8 extending from a lower edge thereof and generally in registry with the spaces between strip members 2 and 3 and 2a and 3a respectively, thewidth oftongue members8 being generally the same as the distance between the upper edges of strip member2 and 3 and 2a and 3a.
In order to assemble the container/pallet assembly each of tongues 8 is introduced into the gap between strip members 2 and 3 and 2a and 3a respectively and folded to assume the position shown in Figure 3 ofthe drawings and is held therein by insertion of locking members 9 into the grooves in the strip members. As a resultthe container 7 isfirmlyfixed to the pallet.
Strip members 2a and 3a may extend the whole of the length of the palley or may only extend a short way, sufficient to accommodate tongues 8, along the underside of pallet support portion 1. Similarly, locking members 9may take the form of long strips.
Substantially the same length as the length of the pallet. Alternatively locking strips 9 take the form of strips of material having about half the length of the pallet.
If desired, in order to achieve even firmer attach mentofthecontainertothepallet, additional pairs of strip members having grooves formed in opposed faces thereof may be attached to the underside ofthe support portion 1, running generally parallel to strip members 2,3 etc.
Whilst it is at present generally preferred to form the pallet of pieces of wood suitably assembled, for example as shown in the drawings, it will be appreciatedthatthepallet may be formed of other material for example of plastics materials, in which case the strip members and pallet support portion may be formed integrally with each other. As shown in the drawings the grooves 4 and 4a are formed wholly within the strip members 2 and 3, i.e. the upper edges of the grooves are spaced apartfrom the lower surface ofthe container support portion 1. If desired, of course, the grooves may be formed so that the lower surface of the container support portion 1 forms the upper surface of the grooves.Further, the pallet support portion need not be continuous as shown in the drawings but may be of discontinuous, e.g. slatted, construction.
- As shown in the drawings, tongues 8 are formed integrally with the side walls of container 7 but, as will be appreciated, they may alternatively be formed integrally with the bottom of container 7. In either case it may be desirable to provide tongues 8 with appropriate fold or weakening lines to facilitate folding ofthem into the configuration shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
Blanks suitable forforming containers for use in the pallet/containers assemblies of the invention are shown in Figures 4,5,6 and 7 of the drawings.
Each ofthe single part blank shown in Figures 4 and 5 ofthe drawings comprises 4,5,6 and 7 of the drawings.
Each of the singlepart blank mentioned in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings comprises four panels 11, 12, 13 and 14separated by fold lines 15 and slots 16, panel 14 being provided with a tab 17 at its outer edge. Each of panels 11 - 14 is divided into an upper portion 11 a, 12a, 13a, 14a; and intermediate portion 11 b, 1 2b, I 3b and 14b; and a lower portion 1 ic, 12c, 13c, and 14c; by a means of fold lines 18 and 19 respectively. In the embodiment shown in Figure 4, lower panel portions llcand 13care each provided with four slots 19 dividing each of them intofourportions, namely three bottom-forming portions 21 and a pair of tongue-forming portions 8.Additionally each of lower portions 11 c, 1 2c, 1 3c and 14e is provided with a second fold line 32, parallel to fold line 19.
To assemble a container from the blank shown in Figure 4, the panels are folded about fold lines 15so that panel portions 1 b and 13bform end walls ofthe desired container and panel portions 1 2b and 1 4b to form side walls of the container, tab 17 being appropriately secured to the free edge of panel portion 11 b, for example by gluing, stitching or stapling. Lower panel portions 21 and 1 2c and 1 4c are folded upwards and are appropriately secured together to form the base or bottom ofthe container with tongue portions 8 protruding downwardlyfrom the base of the container.Upper panel portions 11 a, 1 2a, 13a and 14a serve to form the top of the container and areappropriatelysecuredtogetherwhenthe appropriate good have been inserted in the container generally afterthe container has been secured, by means of tongues 8, to a pallet as described above.
The second fold line 23 serves to assist in folding the tongues 8 over the container support portion of the pallet. If desired, tongues 8 may be provided with additional fold lines to assist in inserting them into the grooves in the strip members ofthe pallet.
The blank shown in Figure 5 of the drawings is generally similarto that shown in Figure 4 except that the tongues 8 do not extend the whole ofthe depth of the panel portions 11cand 13e and are separated from the body of the lower portion by means of cut lines 23.
The blank shown in Figure 5 is erected into a container in a generally similar mannerto that described for the blank shown in Figure 4.
The pairs of blanks shown in Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings are generally similar in construction to the single part blanks shown in Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings respectively except that portions 12 and 13 are wholly separated and panel portion 12 is provided with a tab 1 7a to be appropriately secured to the free edge of panel portion 13b. Containers are erected from the blanks shown in Figures 6 and 7 in a generally similar mannerto that described above except, of course, that in erection ofthe containertab 17a must, as described above, be appropriately secured to the free edges of panel portion 13b.
