Niniejszy wynalazek dotyczy sposobów identyfikacji stymulantów do biogenicznego wytwarzania metanu w formacjach węglowodoronośnych. Sposoby obejmują zastosowanie informacji o sekwencji kwasu nukleinowego w celu określenia produktów genów, które stanowią enzymy z różnych szlaków zaangażowanych w przemianie węglowodorów w metan. Enzymy i stymulanty zidentyfikowane sposobami według wynalazku mogą być stosowane w sposobach wzmagania biogenicznego wytwarzania metanu, na przykład przez dodanie do pokładów węgla lub odwiertów metanowych w złożach węgla.
