Description
Vandig oppløsning for å gjøre tøy av cellulosefibre flammesikkert.
Mange forskjellige midler har vært fo-reslått for å gjøre tøy flammesikkert. Noen
har vært benyttet med hell, men få har
de nødvendige egenskaper til å motstå de
påkjenninger de utsettes for ved behandling og rensning, særlig gjentatt vasking
av tøyet. Noen av de kjente behandlingsmidler lar seg imidlertid til en viss grad
vaske, men de fleste forandrer tøyets utseende eller «tekstur» betraktelig. Blant de
behandlingsmidler for å gjøre tøy motstandsdyktig mot oppflamming, som ikke
er vaskbare er de som er basert på fosfa-ter, borater og sulfamater. Andre midler,
som er vaskbare, omfatter harpikser, klo-rerte harpikser eller voks sammen med et
uorganisk oksyd, som antimonoksyd. Disse
midler har imidlertid den ulempe at de
forandrer tøyets utseende betraktelig, og
at de må tilsettes i store mengder. Ved
Erifon-prosessen behandles tøy med en
vandig oppløsning av titanylklorid og antimontriklorid i nærvær av saltsyre i overskudd. Ved de fleste anvendelser av titan
i prosesser for å gjøre tøy flammesikkert
har titan vært tilsatt eller utfelt som titan dioksyd for å gi ugjennomsiktige pig-menteffekter.
Hensikten med foreliggende oppfinnelse er å angi en oppløsning for å impregnere
tøy av cellulosefibre for å gjøre disse flamme- og glødesikre. Når disse oppløsninger
anvendes til behandling av tøy etter de foretrukne fremgangsmåter, vil den oppnåd-de impregnering ikke påvirkes av vaskning
og impregneringen vil ikke forandre tøyets
utseende eller «tekstur»;
Ced flammesikkert, henholdsvis gløde-sikkert, forståes i denne forbindelse at
tøyet ikke brenner med flamme henholds-
vis ikke gløder når den ytre antennelses-årsak fjernes.
Den vandige oppløsning ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelse er karakterisert ved at den inneholder et eller flere titansalter av formelen TiClx(0-CO-R)(4-x), hvor R kan være vannstoff, metyl eller etyl, og hvor x kan variere fra 1 til 3. Innholdet av titan, beregnet som titandioksyd, i oppløsningen er fra 65 til 250 g/l, fortrinsvis ca. 100 g/l.
Konsentrasjonen av titankloridacylat i oppløsningen kan variere betraktelig og man har funnet at tilfredsstillende resultater fåes ved anvendelse av konsentrasjo-ner innen de angitte grenser.
I oppløsningen kan kloridkonsentra-sjonen i forhold til titaninnholdet variere betraktelig og det har vist seg at man får tilfredsstillende resultater når kloridet er tilstede i mengder fra 1 til 3 mol for hvert mol titan. Oppløsninger, som inneholder overskudd av klorid i forhold til titanmeng-den, dvs. mer enn 3 mol klorid pr. mol titan, er mer stabile, gelatinerer ikke lett og nedsetter tøyets strekkfasthet. Oppløs-ninger som har underskudd på klorid, dvs. mindre enn 1 mol klorid pr. mol titan er ustabile og vanskelige å behandle. Det or-ganiske radikal kan være tilstede i mengder fra 1 mol til 3 mol for hvert mol titan. Disse forhold gjør at man kommer frem til den ovenfor angitte formel for titansal-tene.
For å forbedre glødesikkerheten såvel som flammesikkerheten kan oppløsningen inneholde antimonklorid. Innholdet av antimon i titankloridacylatoppløsningen kan variere betraktelig, men det har vist seg fordelaktig å anvende 0,4 mol til 1,2 mol antimontriklorid pr. mol titankloridacylat.
Skjønt foreliggende vandige oppløs-ning kan anvendes til impregnering av tøy på flere måter, har det vist seg særlig fordelaktig å anvende følgende fremgangsmåte som er beskyttet i patent nr. 86.724: Tøyet behandles med den vandige opp-løsning på en hvilken som helst hensikts-messig måte, f. eks. ved å dyppe tøyet i oppløsningen eller ved å sprøyte oppløsnin-gen på tøyet. Overskuddet av oppløsnin-gen på tøyet kan fjernes f. eks. ved å vri tøyet mellom ruller. Det har vist seg særlig fordelaktig derpå å utsette det behandlede tøy for en delvis tørring i luft i en kortere tid hvorved titankloridacylatopp-løsningen felles ut på tøyet i form av en gel. Tøyet som inneholder det gelatinerte impregneringsmiddel, behandles derpå med et alkali for å heve pH i det behandlede tøy til over 7,5 fortrinsvis over 9,0, men ikke over 12,0. Derpå skylles tøyet grundig med vann og tørres.
Man har funnet at den gunstigste mengde impregneringsmiddel i det ferdige behandlede tøy (tørr basis) er ca. 6,0 pst. til 9,0 pst. av tøyets vekt når titanklorid-acylatoppløsningen anvendes alene, mens den er ca. 14 pst. til 16 pst. når der anvendes en oppløsning som også inneholder antimontriklorid.
Ved behandling av tøyet med foreliggende vandige oppløsning vil tøyet oppta og holde fast på fibrene en mengde oppløs-ning som praktisk talt er lik tøyets vekt, dvs. det blir en vektøkning på ca. 100 pst.
Når titanforbindelsene i en oppløsning ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelse bringes til å gelatinere ut på tøy ifølge den foretrukne fremgangsmåte for anvendelsen av opp-løsningen, oppnår man avgjorte fordeler fremfor de tilfelle hvor der anvendes ikke-gelatinerte stoffer. Tilstedeværelsen av en gel på tøyet gir en mer jevn og ensartet fordeling av titan- og antimoninnholdet på tøyet.
I alminnelighet har tøyet med det gelatinerte salt en sur reaksjon og må gjøres alkalisk for å gi de beste resultater som nevnt ovenfor.
Foreliggende vandige oppløsninger kan anvendes ved behandling av tøy, som er fremstilt av cellulosefibre, som bomull, lin og hamp, og cellulosederivater, deriblant viskose og celluloseacetat.
For å belyse oppfinnelsen nærmere.angis følgende eksempler: Eksempel 1: Titankloridacetatet ble fremstilt på
følgende måte: To vektdeler blyacetat (Pb) (C2H302)2.
3H20) ble oppløst i en vektdel vann ved 65°. Blyacetatoppløsningen ble derpå lang-somt satt til en titantetrakloridoppløsning, som inneholdt titan i en mengde svarende til 300 g titandioksyd pr. liter. Den anvendte mengde blyacetatoppløsning var nok til å reagere med 65 pst. av kloridinnholdet i titantetrakloridet. Tiden for å sette bly-acetatoppløsningen til titantetrakloridet var 2 timer for å holde blandingens tem-peratur under 25° C. Blandingen ble derpå filtrert for å fjerne blykloridet fra titan-kloridacetatoppløsningen.
Titankloridacetatoppløsningen inneholdt 128 g. titan pr. liter, beregnet som titandioksyd, 262 g acetat pr. liter og 70 g klorid pr. liter, tilsvarende 0,45 mol klorid for hvert mol acetat, hvilket kan betraktes som en oppløsning av titankloridacetat med den empiriske formel TiClxAcy, hvor x er lik 1,2 og y er lik 2,8.
Denne titankloridacetatoppløsning ble fortynnet med vann for å få en oppløsning som inneholdt 100 g/l beregnet som titandioksyd. Denne oppløsning ble benyttet til behandling av tøy. Det benyttede tøy var bomullstvill av vekt 278 g/m2.
Tøyet ble dyppet ned i oppløsningen i 2 1/2 minutt og ført gjennom en håndvrimaskin. Operasjonen ble gjentatt en gang (neddypping og vridning igjen) for å oppnå god gjennombløtning. Det behandlede tøy ble derpå delvis tørret ved å utsette det i 2 timer for luftens påvirkning for å gelatinere behandlingsmidlet på tøy-et. Det behandlede tøy med den gelatinerte oppløsning ble derpå neddyppet i 5 minutter i en oppløsning av natriumhydroksyd, som inneholdt 200 g NaOH pr. liter, for å gjøre den i tøyet tilbakeholdte oppløsning alkalisk. pH-verdien av den i tøyet tilbakeholdte oppløsning var da 9,5. Den oversky-tende oppløsning ble presset ut av tøyet ved å føre det gjennom en håndvrimaskin. Tøyet ble derpå grundig vasket i vann inn-til den tilbakeholdte oppløsning hadde en pH-verdi av 8,0. Det vaskede tøy ble der-etter tørret. Hele prosessen ble utført ved værelsetemperatur. Det behandlede tøy ble utsatt for standard-flamme-prøven som beskrevet nedenfor, og resultatene er angitt i tabell 1.
Eksempel 2:
Til fremstilling av. en oppløsning, som inneholdt både titankloridacetat og antimontriklorid, ble en annen porsjon av den i eksempel 1 benyttede titankloridacetat-oppløsning blandet med antimonkloridopp-løsning for å få en behandlingsoppløsning som inneholdt 100 g titan pr. liter, beregnet som titandioksyd, og 128 g antimon pr. liter beregnet som antimontrioksyd. Tøyet ble behandlet på samme måte som i eksempel 1 med unntagelse av at tørketemperaturen var 50°, at tørketiden var 50 minutter, og at ammoniumhydrok-sydoppløsning ble tilsatt, i stedet for natriumhydroksyd for å gjøre tøyet med ge-latin alkalisk. Det behandlede tøy ble un-derkastet standard-flammeprøven, og resultatene er angitt i tabell 1.
Standard-flammeprøven kalles. 45° mikrobrennerprøven og består i at åen glatte side av tøyet utsettes for flammen av en mikrobrenner idet tøyet holdes i 45° vinkel og 3/4 tomme over toppen av bren-, neren. Flammen, som er 1.3/4 tomme lang,, slikker over tøyet i 12 sekunder. Etter-flammings- og etterglødningsdata angis i sekunder og forkullingsområdet i kvadrat-tommer. Fremgangsmåte og apparatur er beskrevet i Robert W. Little: «Flameproo-fing Textile Fabrics», Reinhold Publishing Corporation, 1947.
Av tabell 1 fremgår det tydelig at både det tøy som er behandlet med titanklorid-acetatoppløsning alene og det som er behandlet med titankloridacetatoppløsning tilsatt antimonklorid har fått flammesikre egenskaper. Det tøy som er behandlet med den antimonholdige oppløsning, er dessuten blitt glødesikkert.
Mens de viste eksempler illustrerer anvendelsen av titankloridacetatoppløsning, som foretrekkes, kan det anvendes oppløs-ninger av titankloridformiat og titanklorid-propionat med lignende virkning. Disse forbindelser er imidlertid dyrere å frem-stille og derfor ikke så økonomiske som acetatsaltet.
Som før nevnt, har mange impregneringsmidler vært brukt for å gjøre tøy flammesikkert, men de har ikke vært istand til å tåle påkjenningen ved behand-
ling og rensning, særlig gjentatt vaskning.
En har funnet at tøy som er behandlet med titankloridacetatoppløsningen iføl-ge foreliggende oppfinnelse beholder flammesikkerheten etter vaskning. Vaskningen utførtes i en rotertrommel med 0,5 pst. nøytral såpeoppløsning ved 70°. Ved anvendelsen av den foretrukne fremgangsmåte ifølge foreliggende oppfinnelse, hvor det brukes en kombinasjon av titan- og antimonforbindelser som beskrevet, bibeholdes imidlertid de flamme- og glødesikre egenskaper også etter gjentatt vaskning. Etter 6 gangers vask er således resultatene omtrent de samme som før vaskningen.
Disse resultater er i tabell 2 sammen-lignet med et velkjent impregneringsmiddel, som består av en blanding av boraks, borsyre og sekundært ammoniumfosfat.
Vandige oppløsninger som inneholder titankloridacylat ifølge foreliggende opp~
finnelse har altså evnen til å gjøre tøy av ~ceiluiosefibré motstandsdyktig mot opp-
flamming. Når behandlingsoppløsningen
dessuten inneholder antimontriklorid oppnår man også en bedring av de glødesikre
egenskaper og disse egenskaper bibeholdes
omtrent uforandret etter gjentatt vasking.
Kombinasjonen av midlene frembringer
øyensynlig en synergistisk virkning som for-høyer flammesikkerheten, foruten at det
bevirker glødesikkerhet og resulterer i at
disse egenskaper bibeholdes etter vasking.
De anvendte impregneringsmidler kan fik-seres ved anvendelsen av den foretrukne
fremgangsmåte som angitt og gjøres hold-bare mot vask.
