Abstract

A pair of welding tongs consists (a) a two-part tubular insulating housing, one part of which is open at the end remote from the connecting zone, for the introduction of a current-carrying cable while the other part is closed at the top end remote from that connecting zone and (b) metal means ensuring (i) the conduction of electrical currents from the cable to the welding electrode and (ii) the fixing of the end of the welding electrode, the retention or otherwise of which is brought about by rotation of the two parts of the housing relative to each other. In the improvement, (c) the metal means consist of a single elongated body fixed in one part of the housing so as to be rotatable but not displaceable axially, (d) the part projecting outside the part of the housing has a longitudinal slit open at the top end, (e) ends of the parts of the body so formed are constructed on the outsides as a wedge, (f) the other part of the housing is provided internally with sloping surfaces near the top end, able to co-operate with the wedge, and (g) the two parts of the housing can be connected together by a screw thread or the like, so that in connecting the two parts the ends are moved towards each other to clamp the end of the welding electrode. The use of a one-part current-carrying device simplifies mfr. and reduces transfer resistances, eliminating current losses.
