Abstract

A metal oxide is reduced to the metal by addn. to a molten metal in a container provided with >=1 projecting part having a channel communicating with the converter vessel and provided with >=1 zone heated by electrical induction to establish a temp. gradient between the content of the heating zone and those of the vessel. The oxide is injected as powder suspended in a carrier gas into the molten metal in the vessel, through a nozzle traversing the refractory lining of the vessel and terminating in this at a specific distance from the openings of the channel, in such a way that (i) the solid particles of metal oxide in the suspension will bring about rapid transport of hotter metal present outside the openings of the channel without penetrating the heating zone and (ii) at the same time the oxide particles will be carried to all parts of the molten metal in the converter vessel, where the desired redn. processes can then take place at an appropriate temp.
