Abstract

Steel rod whose C content is 1%, pref. 0.3-1% is treated on leaving a hot rolling mill at 650-1050 degrees C by applying a thin layer e.g. 0.05-1mm of a material capable of adhering to the rod at its exit temp. and staying adhered at least until the rod is introduced into a controlled cooling bath at or near its boiling point. Esp. the coating is a mineral oxide, hydroxide or salt or a mixture, or a borate, phosphate, silicate or mixture and may be pulverulent, liquid, in gaseous or liquid suspension or a conc. soln. It may be applied by projection, immersion or in a charged gas stream.
